Dear Dr. Marlatt: While it is all fresh in my mind I want to tell you and Mrs. Marlatt how interested I was in what you told me yesterday of your winter's journey up the White Nile and into the lake and mountain region of Central Africa. It will be forty-eight years ago next November when my father, mother and I left Cairo for our,trip up the Nile in a newly- built, most comfortable sailing dahabeah which was our home for the next four months, when we left it to go to Jerusalem and through the Holy Land to Beyrouth, which made a most interesting climax to our winter on the Nile. As I said yesterday, we could then go no further in the dahabeah than Assuan, at the foot of the first cataract, no private boats being allowed beyond at that time on account of the war with the Mahdi, then at the height of his power at Khartoum; but once a week the Government mail usefull steamer went up to the second cataract, at Wadi Halfa, where there was stationed a garrison of some seven or eight thousand Nubian troops com- manded by at score or more of English officers, and, waiting our opportunity, we made the trip Halfa up and returned on her, with a few other passen- gers. Among these was a son of Professor Darwin with whom I became intimate on the way up, and who, having a letter to the commander of the garrison, was promptly invited, on our arrival, to dinner with the Mess, it being New Year's Eve, 1892. He wrote back asking that I be included in the invitation and we went together to an occasion, very gay and pleasant, I have always looked back to with peculiar pleasure -- all the more for its con- trast with the grim fighting under these same men which later followed. He was educated at the Agricultural Atchison, Kansas College at Manhattan, Kans. (B.S., 1884); Died 1954 M.S., 1886), where he was assistant professor for two years. He is the person who introduced Fields Entomology the ladybird insect into the United States to Institutions Bureau of Entomology (USDA) control the San Jose scale insect, which was Federal Horticultural Board first discovered in San Jose, California in 1880 Entomological Society of Washington by John Henry Comstock and named by him. Association of Economic Entomologists Marlatt worked for the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture. In 1912 he was appointed chairman of the Federal Horticultural Board. He was president of the Entomological Society of Washington in 1897-98 and of the Association of Economic Entomologists in 1899. His 1907 description of periodical cicadas remains a classic in the field. In this article, Marlatt proposed a grouping of periodical cicades into 30 different broods, each given a Roman numeral. Broods I-XVII were for 17-year cicadas, and Broods XVIII-XXX were for 13-year cicadas. Subsequent research has established that, in fact, there are only 15 distinct broods, not 30, but Marlatt's scheme continues to be used. [1] Bilbiography Marlatt, C. L. (1898).
