In the 1800's an idyllic and simple Eden, Maine became the home for many strong farmers

and hardy fishermen. This community which was developing on the northern shores of
Mount Desert Island would later be known as Bar Harbor.

Harbor for summer respites. They found enjoyment and relaxation in the natural beauty of
Mount Desert Island. Days were spent swimming, boating, and traveling by horse and
carriage to the Jordan Pond Teahouse for tea and popovers. In those early days residents
opened their homes to boarders, and provided comfortable housing and robust meals of
chowders, mutton, fresh grown vegetables, and plum (now known as blueberry) pies.

The town of Bar Harbor embraced these visitors who came to be known as "rusticators". As
their numbers increased, hotels and inns were established. In 1872 there were fifteen hotels
in downtown Bar Harbor.

About this time, a young ambitious man named Fred C. Lynam came to town. Upon his
arrival the town fathers issued the usual "warning". This was a written notification given to all
newcomers who were not gainfully employed. They were given a pre-determined amount of
time to find employment. If they didn't, they were required to go back to their former
community. Mr. Lynam set about to build and eventually managed the Lynam Motel on Main
Street. He married, began a family, and established a homestead on Schooner Head Road.

As the year round community of Bar Harbor was growing, Mr. Lynam began exploring other
entrepreneurial ventures. He was far sighted and saw the need to provide protection for
people's property and wealth. Historical records indicate that there was no local bank and
only one, now defunct, insurance/real estate agency in Bar Harbor in 1884. Fred C. Lynam
became a partner of the newly established Grant/Lynam Company, which provided insurance
and real estate services to the growing community.

The early years focused more on the real estate and rental business, which complimented the
growing demand of the summer visitors seeking cottages to buy or rent.

The Second World War increased the public's awareness of the need to financially protect
their property, and the insurance part of the company began to grow as a result.
Today the Lynam Agency still does business on Main Street in Bar Harbor. The real estate
and insurance companies have become separate entities over the past ten years, yet they
work cooperatively and complimentarily in the same office building.
Fred C. Lynam died in April of 1942. The April 16, 1942 edition of the Bar Harbor Times
describes the life of a man who lived through and helped shape the ever-changing community

of Bar Harbor. The businesses he established still prosper today. The headline of the Bar
Harbor Times, which announces his death states "Bar Harbor Loses Fine Citizen." Fred
C.
Lynam was more than a successful businessman, and more importantly he gave a great
deal
to his community. The lists of organizations he helped serve include the Jesup Memorial
Library, the Red Cross, Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor Water Company, the
Village Improvement Association, and the Bar Harbor Masonic Lodge. His estate provided
funds, which continue to help many of these organizations and provides dozens of
scholarships to area students every year.
This same spirit of professionalism and dedication to clients and the community continues
today. Employees of the agency volunteer and serve the community in many ways, through
School Boards, churches, the local Rotary Club, the Red Cross, and the Jesup Memorial
Library. The philosophy of working and living in a community culminates into an organization
with a rich history and a deep interest in the people they serve.
