THE CRANBERRY CLUB 50th Anniversary The Cranberry Club began as a vision that dazzled the minds of a small group of ladies, summering at North East Harbor, having a picnic together, in the early nineties on the spot where the Club House stands. At that time the bushes had not grown up. It was an open pasture of short grass, and outcropping ledges. One could sit anywhere and see without interruption the glorious view over the rocks out to the open sea. The idea of a club house there seemed to come to several of the group almost simultaneously, but the leading spirit in carrying it out to an early reality was Miss Miriam Phillips Reynolds. She was six feet tall, a person of vigorous opinions, and warm sympathies. She was an old- time Bostonian by birth and upbringing, being a grand- - daughter of John Phillips, first mayor of Boston. Her mother was a sister of Wendell Phillips. She was a New Yorker by adoption, as a member of the family of her brother-in-law, Dr. William R. Huntington, Rector of Grace Church, who was, for many years, one of the colony of summer cottagers at North East Harbor. Miss Reynolds was the first president of the Club and gave enthusiastic attention to all its affairs, until her death in 1908. She also gave much attention to overcoming, as far as possible, the difficulties RT
