MISSION AND PURPOSE OF COLLEGE OF THE ATLANTIC College of the Atlantic was founded in 1969, admitted its first class in the fall of 1972, and in 1976 received full accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The College's three major resource areas-Environmental Science, Arts and Design, and Human Studies-provide focal points for a number of related disciplines and inter- disciplinary programs. The College encourages students to assess their own interests and strengths and plan a series of courses, internships, and senior projects that fulfill their educational and career goals. College of the Atlantic is the only private college in the country offering the single degree of Bachelor of Arts in Human Ecology. This degree is designed to equip students with the understanding that all things in our world are interrelated, that no single discipline, event or action stands in isolation. The College's 200 graduates testify to the effectiveness of this education; they are pursuing graduate studies and careers as lawyers, editors, teachers, planners, scientists, builders and administrators.
