OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR My dear Mr. Rowell: Your letter of May 21, addressed to the Secretary of the Interior, regarding the reported unnecessary building of roads on Mt. Desert Island, has been referred to me, and, in reply thereto, I have to state that this matter was recently taken up with Superintendent Dorr of the Lafayette National Park and he advises us that no road is building in or bordering on the National Park lands, except the two which have been under con- struction for some time. The Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations, the main donor to the Government of its present lands, still re- tains as a trust for the people considerable tracts of land, and the road building now proceeding lies wholly over land d belonging to them and constitutes a relocation of old road- way long determined on by them.
