Dear Mr. Secretary, I thank you for your kind note of the 9th enclosing copy of the minutes of the hearing at Washington which I will keep on my file for reference incase of necessity. I am glad to know that a few of you have had a conference at Jordan Pond recently, and I cannot but feel that if those officially con- meeted with the Park understood the objection that 80 many feel in regard to a superabundance of roads and the proposed motor road through the Jordan Pond Valley district, that some plan would be devised whereby the seclusion of the Park would be retained. I think that both Mr. Yard and Mr. Cammerer are anxious to have the motor road, but I have a strong hope that the officials higher up in the Park service will disagree with them. I trust that the work on the trails is going along as usual and I have no doubt that under the energetic supervision of Mr. Peabody nothing is being left undone. Perhaps if the Chairmen of the various Path Committees are all now on the Island a further conference could be ar- ranged and some plan devised for the benefit of those who are united in wishing to prevent an over construction of drives that would work so much injury to the Island and particularly in the districts that we wish to preserve and where we are anxious to retain the beautiful seclusion that we have enjoyed for so many years. Since dictating the above letter I have received my copy of the Bar Harbor Times of July 9th and I have read with great interest the letter on the subject of the proposed new roads in the Lafayette National Park, signed by the initials W. L. P. It is admirable and I wish I knew who wrote it that I might communicate with him. Such letters as this will help our cause immensely. I hope that many will appear.
