Dear Mr. Rowell:- There is going to be a hearing before the Secretary of the Interior next Wednesday in Washington concerning the road system at Bar Harbor in the National Park. We people here are very much interested in having the plans that were made in 1922 and which have been partly completed, carried out. I enclose you copy of letter I have written to the Secretary of Interior and one which Deasy has written. This shows the attitude of practically everyone in this vicinity. It was thought Senator Pepper was opposed to the automobile roads but it turns out that he is not and will favor them. He thinks that the road planned in the western section of the Park around the mountain is not well adapted for automobiles and purhaps should not be finished but it has gone BO far along that he doubts the expediency of objecting to that. His principal point is that no more roads should be built in Bubble Pond Nalley and as a matter of fact no more are intended. I think a misunderstanding among a few people is the only thing that causes any trouble. I am told, in fact I just learned today, that you were in some way opposed to this plan which has been so nearly completed and that you mighthave the intention of going to Washington. I earnestly hope that you will not do that or that if you do go that you will favor our proposition and by that I mean the propositions which are so earnestly supported by the people of this state, from the Governor down, as you may have seen from the last Bar Harbor paper. There is a very widespread and deep feeling in regard to it. There will be a tremendous delegation from here go down in favor of the road system. Will you be good enough to look over some of the copies enclosed and unless you feel that you are absolutely committed to oppose, I hope that you will accede to the almost unanimous wish of the people of this section, including almost all the non-residents, also, and offer no further objection to the completion of the work.
