Picture and information compliments of Dr. Joseph Grant.
Aquila
This picture shows Aquila, Commodore Eddison's 30-square meter boat, in an
easterly breeze out of the Eastern Way. It shows the curved mast head, intended
to give the main sail the shape of a gull's wing. The boats were 42 feet over all
and 32 feet on the waterline, and only 6 feet wide. They had round main booms
and could be roller-reefed. They were the first boats in the Fleet to have a
symmetrical balloon spinnaker. As the picture shows, the spinnakers were
really too small, and should have been big enough to set in front of the jib-stay.
The other 30-square in the picture is VaLee, John Tyssowski's 30-square #1.
She was blue and Eddison's was yellow. Their colors matched those in the flag
of Sweden, where the boats were made.

NEW HONORARY MEMBER
Picture and information provided by Dr. Grant
Dr. Joseph L. Grant
As a small boy Dr. Grant was allowed to crew on In. A-boat #2, and later
to race on Nancy, one of the thirty-square meter boats, and on Christopher
Columbus, a gaff-rigged sloop with a mind of her own All these boats carried
The Fleet burgee. Later when in college he operated a cruising camp for boys
on the schooners Amberjack and Aleda, the latter a sistership of Sagamore.
Sailing gave way to his career in medicine for twenty years, but then he
returned to Northeast Harbor and chartered Auriga, IC#2, for the August Cruise.
An important moment in Fleet history occurred when Wayne Wibby came out
to see the Cruise start in his nifty Folkboat, hailing Joe to ask "Where are all the
Internationals?" (there were only three) and Joe replied "Get yourself one and
come on out and race!" Wayne proceeded to do that cominating the class for
years but in such a way that it grew and grew by the addition of people who
hoped they could go out and beat him. The competition-built class has more or
less shaped the Fleet for the last several decades.
Joe bought Firefly, #1, and raced enthusiastically for years, but in 1993 sold her
to buy Fair Lead, a Hood-designed 1960 forty feot yewl, and has flown the
Fleet burgee in waters as far away as Labrador.
Joe is very glad to be made an honorary member. As cne-time Commodore and
once a long-term member of the Nominating Committee, he applauds the present
regulations that govern that committee, and equally app. auds the courage of the
Executive Committees that have decided to establish the Northeast Harbor Sailing
School. Long may it flourish!

THE COMMODORE'S REPORT
The summer of 2002 was warm and dry, but favored the Fleet by allowing
nearly every class and race to go on as scheduled. A late season hurricane provided
a few days' concern before it turned east to make a landfall in Nova Scotia.
The big story for 2002 was the launching of the Northeast Harbor Sailing
School It was the cumulation of a four year effort, in which the Fleet first founded a
not for profit Maine corporation under a different name and with a different specific
purpose, duly registered with the Internal Revenue as eligible to accept tax deduct-
ible gifts. In the fall of 2000, Stocky Smith proposed that we make that entity the
operator of the Fleet's sailing school, or Junior Program.
The decision to go ahead was easily endorsed, as were the operational
details: to be named: The Northeast Harbor Sailing School, the permanent Fleet
staff to continue doing for the Sailing School what they had been doing for the
Junior Program, and the Sailing School to continue to use the Fleet's boats and
facilities. In addition, a new membership type was created to encourage local
children to participate in the program.
Since the Fleet founded the Sailing School, the Fleet's Executive
Committee acted temporarily as its Board of Directors. The Fleet was obliged to
name a permanent Board of Directors; thus necessating an agreement between the
Fleet and the Sailing School. Alan Crain undertook the drafting of this agreement.
Finally all was set and on September 10, 2002, the Fleet's Executive
Committee elected the permanent Board of Directors of the Sailing School:
Anne Marie Hart
Barry Stratton
Tom Brown
Jim Fernald
Bob Johnstone
Sally Bienkowski
Gary Madeira
Alex Wheeler
The last three were appointed by the Fleet for staggered three year terms,
commencing October 1, 2002.
6
In what we hope is a welcome development, the Fleet reduced the total dues for the
Family and Individual members by 23%. This was largely due to the completion of
the planned capital replenishment, of the Fleet's watercraft.
In 2002 enrollment at the Sailing School continued to grow, to an
enrollment of 188, for a small increase over 2001. Equally encouraging, as reported
elsewhere in this Annual Report, were the higher standings of the Sailing School's
students in the regional interclub regattas.
In 2002, the Fleet continued to grow. We welcomed new members:
Mr. and Mrs. Luke H. Borda
Mr. Howard Lapsley
Ms. Mika Brezinski
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Moriarty II
Rev. and Mrs. Brenton H. Cary
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Rockefeller
Mr. and Mrs. John C. Cochran
Mr. and Mrs. Boykin Rose
Mr. and Mrs. Francis I.G. Coleman
Mr. J. Thomas Schanck
Mr. and Mrs. James A. Draper
Mr. and Mrs. John K. Shaw
Mr. and Mrs. William Eacho
Mr. Niccolo Vitelli
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Eagan
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Woods
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hopkinson
Mr. D.A. Walker Young
The Fleet is indebted to Patrick Wilmerding for his Fleet Night presentation
of the 2001 America's Cup Jubilee, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the first
America's Cup, again sailed around the Isle of Wight.
In 2002, the highlights of the IOD racing were hosting the North
Americans, which was won by John Henry, and the preparations for hosting the
2003 INTERNATIONAL ONE DESIGN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, a/k/a
"the Worlds", in the last week of July.
In 2002, the Fleet finally got the missing pilings replaced on the dock,
thanks to Sandy Andrew's work with contractors over a period of two years. Less
happily, in early August the Shearwater, while at anchor, was run into, and the
damage was substantial. Lastly, the Town acknowledged that the partial collapse of
the seawall between the flagpole and the road was caused by a break in the sewer
line, which the Town was repairing in September.
The successes of the season were due in large part to the efforts of Greg
Wilkinson and the fine summer staff which he hired. I also thank all the members
of the Executive Committee for twelve months of diligent and effective work.
Yours respectfully,
John T. Roberts
Commodore

Senior Members have the same privileges as Individual Members.
FAMILY MEMBERS Any person or couple otherwise eligible for membership
may be elected to Family Membership of the Fleet.
Family Membership extends the privileges of membership without the payment of
additional dues or assessments to the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren

their children desires to enjoy the privileges of membership.
INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS - Any eligible person who has reached his or her 30th

no initiation fee for Resident Student Members.
GUESTS - The Northeast Harbor Fleet welcomes the crews and houseguests of
members when they are accompanied by the member and abide by Fleet regulations. House
guests may participate in the Adult and Junior Sailing Program(s) of the Northeast Harbor
Sailing School for a period of up to one week, provided: 1. they are sponsored by the mem-
ber; 2. there is space in the Program; 3. they meet such eligibility requirements as the Fleet
may from time to time have in effect for the programs, and 4. they pay the applicable
activity fees. Houseguests desirous of continuing their association with the Fleet for more
than one week shall apply for an appropriate membership. The facilities and moorings of
the Fleet are restricted to use by members only, except upon invitation of the Fleet to
non-members participating in Fleet sponsored events.
INITIATION FEE - The Executive Committee may establish an initiation fee that
shall be paid by new Family and Individual Members of the Fleet and those former mem-
bers whose membership has lapsed for one year. A newly elected former member who
resigned from the Fleet in good standing shall pay the lesser of the capital dues assessed
during their leave or one-half of the initiation fee established for the class of membership
for which they are elected.
SECTION 2. Annual dues for the seven classes of membership shall be
set by the Executive Committee. Dues, assessments, and charges are payable within 30
days of invoice. A member whose dues, assessments, or charges remain unpaid on July 1 is
subject to having his or her name posted at the Fleet until outstanding invoices have been
paid. A boat will only be scored in a Fleet race or event once the outstanding dues capital
dues, charges and/or entry fees (if any) have been paid. A race entered prior to payment
shall be scored a DNS. Members whose dues, assessments or charges are unpaid by August
31 will have their names dropped from the membership rolls, and may be reinstated as

Independent Auditors' Report
January 21, 2003
To the Executive Committee of
The Northeast Harbor Fleet
Northeast Harbor, Maine
We have audited the accompanying statement of financial
position of the Northeast Harbor Fleet as of September 30, 2002
and 2001, and the related statements of activities and cash flows
for the years then ended. These financial statements are the
responsibility of management. Our responsibility is to express
an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits.
We conducted our audits in accordance with generally accepted
auditing standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform
the audits to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial
statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes
examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and
disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes
assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates
made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial
statement presentation. We believe that our audits provide a
reasonable basis for our opinion.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above
present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of
the Northeast Harbor Fleet as of September 30, 2002 and 2001, and
the results of its operations and its cash flows for the years then
ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles.

THE 77th GEORGE DAVENPORT HAYWARD CUP RACE
The Cup was given to the Fleet following the untimely death of its first
Commodore. The race is a handicap race with the slowest boats starting first,
and the fastest class starting last; the first boat across the finish line wins.
Each winner's names go on the permanent Trophy base, and also in each
Annual Report. The race has been held every year since 1925.
