YACHT RACING AT NORTHEAST HARBOR
An Historical Sketch
Yacht racing at Northeast Harbor traces its beginnings
back to the early years of the twentieth century when a
composite class of yachts of from twenty-one to twenty-five
feet water-line length were raced successfully for a number
of seasons. Among the principal contenders were Pirate,
William S. Grant, Jr., and Chief, Dr. George G. Hayward.
Interest lagged after a time.
In 1913, however, yacht racing once more aroused
interest. In that year, a one-design class of 17 1/2-foot
knockabouts was organized in Bar Harbor, and several
of the yachts were owned in Seal Harbor and in North-
east Harbor. Under the auspices of the then newly
established Seal Harbor Yacht Club, races were held for
the Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor yachts. The
climax of the season was a race between these yachts and
the Bar Harbor yachts off Seal Harbor. The race was
won by Bird, Charles D. Dickey, Jr.
In the spring of 1914, because of the keen interest in
the preceding year, yachts were sought which would be
suitable for racing at Northeast Harbor. Just at that
time there were placed on the market several 17-foot
yachts designed by Edwin A. Boardman and built by
George Lawley and Son Corporation which belonged to a
class which had been organized by the Eastern Yacht
Club at Marblehead. Six of these yachts were purchased
by residents of Northeast Harbor and vicinity Daffydill,
Henry Parkman; Ino, Francis C. Grant and Edward W.
Madeira; Atlanta, Ernest B. Dane, Jr.; Moslem III,
17
William S. Grant, Jr.; Squaw, W. W. Rowse; and Kipper,
Dr. Richard H. Harte. These yachts raced throughout
the seasons of 1914 and 1915 and proved satisfactory
in every way.
In 1916 came the disturbance on the Mexican border,
and in 1917 and 1918 the World War. Those most inter-
ested in yacht racing at Northeast Harbor were in the
service of the nation. In 1919, however, racing attracted
new interest, and the races were conducted on a more
formal scale than before. The Fleet increased in size in
this year and in 1920.
In 1921 the racing organization was perfected. Pre-
viously the Fleet had raced boat for boat in one class.
In this year three classes were organized: Class A, the
Eastern Yacht Club 17-footers, eleven in number; Class
B, the Bar Harbor-Manchester-Islesboro-North Haven
17 1/2-footers, six in number; and Class C, a composite
class of all boats in the neighborhood of from 15 to 18 feet
water line. Scores were computed for the first time and
the prize pennants first awarded.
In 1922 the miscellaneous class, Class C, was discon-
tinued, as little interest had been shown in it. An inno-
vation was the three-day cruise to Blue Hill Bay in which
nine yachts took part. From this humble beginning, the
cruise has grown to one of the most attractive features of
the season.
Further progress of the Fleet was evident in 1923, when
the Fleet was formed into a yacht club under the name
"The Northeast Harbor Fleet," and the Fleet burgee
adopted. Two new classes were added: Class o, the
Northeast Harbor 15-footers, thirteen in number; and a
18
new Class C, the Eliot-Manchester boats, three in number.
The first cups were presented to the several winners at
the end of the season. The following summer arrange-
ments were completed for an annual series of races with
the Tarratine Club of Dark Harbor, and the first races
were held.
In 1925 occurred the death of George Davenport Hay-
ward, for many years the guiding spirit in yacht racing at
Northeast Harbor. In his death the Fleet sustained a
severe loss. As a memorial to him his friends generously
presented the George Davenport Hayward Memorial Cup
which was first sailed for in August, 1925. In that same
year, under an agreement with the Seal Harbor Yacht
Club, Class MDI was added to the racing classes.
Because of the great increase in the size of the Fleet it
became necessary to employ a full-time secretary in 1927,
and in 1928 Fleet headquarters were established on Main
Street, to be kept open every week-day morning during
the racing season by the secretary. All records are
maintained there, Race Committee meetings held there,
and race results posted.
The 30 Square Meter Class was started in 1929,
when Commodore Eddison and John Tyssowski imported
boats from Sweden. The following season welcomed a
new class of members, the junior members, and introduced
the Bullseye Class for junior racing. A Fleet landing
stage was established at the Clifton dock which enabled
the Fleet to reciprocate in some measure for the courtesy
extended to its members by other yacht clubs.
The growth of the Fleet was very healthy. In 1930
there was a spirit of fine sportsmanship and keen com-
19
petition, which it is the aim of the officers to promote
and foster. The Fleet started a series of home and home
races in the 30 Square Meter Class with the Corinthian
Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Two boats of
our Fleet were sent to Marblehead to compete in a series of
five races, and were defeated by a score of 30 to 20 points.
In 1931 the Fleet was able to purchase the Sparrow for
a Committee boat. It had been used for this purpose
for four seasons and found to be particularly well adapted
to the work. Two new 30 Square Meter Class boats
were added to the Fleet. The Corinthian Yacht Club
sent three crews to Northeast Harbor to compete in our
boats, which were drawn by lot. The point score of this
series was 63 to 35, in favor of The Northeast Harbor Fleet.
The July Cruise was established in 1932 and has be-
come an annual fixture. The Lawrence Dickey Memorial
team races between A and B classes were inaugurated in
1933.
The officers of the Fleet have continued to foster
one-design classes, upon which the success of the Fleet,
to a considerable degree, has been based. They have
felt that one-design classes offer the best basis for con-
tinued progress.
20
COMMODORE'S REPORT, 1936
During the summer of 1936 Mr. Roland L. Taylor
offered the Eastern Steamship dock to the Fleet to be
used as a base and clubhouse. The Fleet officers gave
careful consideration to Mr. Taylor's proposal. A survey
of the structure showed that the piles and timbers would
be a source of high upkeep expense in the years to come,
in addition to the cost of changing the building to make it
suitable and comfortable for a Fleet Base. Under the
circumstances it was felt that the Fleet was not in a posi-
tion to accept Mr. Taylor's offer. This opportunity is
taken to express our most hearty thanks to Mr. Taylor
for his most kind and generous offer.
This proposal, and the resulting discussions, have shown
that there is a very considerable opinion in our member-
ship, particularly among the younger members, in favor
of a Fleet Base. It is repeatedly pointed out that there
should be a central meeting place for those interested in
our major sport, a place where boats and gear could be
kept by those not having their own piers and floats, where
members who like to look after their own boats could have
convenient facilities for hauling on the beach, general
upkeep, and preparation for racing. It is also true that
our lack of a club and club floats makes it difficult to bring
together the younger boys and girls for that training in
sail which will make them the Corinthians of the future.
Sailing lessons for the youngsters who desire to learn
might well be part of the policy of the Fleet.
A proper Fleet Base would undoubtedly encourage a
larger number of visiting yachts and yachtsmen and in
22
time tend to bring desirable new people to join the summer
colony and further the development of the Fleet and
Northeast Harbor itself.
Various other proposals for a permanent base have been
studied, but it is obvious that no steps can be taken till a
definite and major trend of opinion is evidenced.
The question of a new class of boats was raised at the
last annual meeting. A standing committee was appointed
consisting of Mr. Eliot Wadsworth, Chairman, Mr. Eddi-
son, and Mr. Spedden, to study and make recommenda-
tions to the Fleet, giving particular consideration to the
new International Class now being built in Norway to
replace the Sound Inter-Club class in Long Island Sound.
Smaller types, stepping-up from the Bullseyes will also
be studied. The Committee will undoubtedly have an
interesting report to make during the coming summer.
The total membership in the Fleet increased during the
year to 218, the largest we have yet had. This is an
increase of 34 over the previous year. The budget showed
a favorable balance of $72.09 after transferring to a
reserve (invested by the Treasurer in a U. S. Government
bond) the sum of $509.27 to cover depreciation of the
Sparrow or her engine. This is necessary because the
Sparrow's engine is ten years old, and the boat itself will
ultimately have to be replaced, and provision must be
made for such contingencies.
Successful and much enjoyed team races were held with
the Bar Harbor Yacht Club, at Northeast in A boats,
and at Bar Harbor in S boats. This has become one of
the best sporting events of the year. The series of three
races resulted in a point score of 500 to 500, an extra-
23
ordinary result. It is pointed out, however, that two out
of three races being in Northeast Harbor, it was not a
sporting decision.
Race week was tried as an experiment, and, by common
consent will be discontinued.
Commodore Fulton J. Redmond of the Bar Harbor
Yacht Club, accomplished seaman and friend of the
Fleet, having taken over the duties of President and
Editor of the Portland Evening News, has hauled down
his broad pennant and Commodore Edward McCormick
Blair has been elected in his place. To both yachting
comrades we extend the best wishes of the Fleet in their
new responsibilities.
On the August Cruises of 1935 and 1936 Mr. Gano
Dunn has acted as Fleet Radio Officer. His prompt and
timely weather reports add greatly to the safety of the
Fleet and are much appreciated by the officers.
The July and August cruises were unusually successful
because of good winds and weather and the fine enter-
tainment provided by Commodore Smith of the Center
Harbor Yacht Club and Commodore Milliken of the
Kollegiwidgwok. Grateful thanks are due to these kind
hosts for their warm welcome and hospitality to the Fleet.
Respectfully submitted,
HENRY RAWLE,
Commodore.

There was thus a decline in the maximum number of
boats racing during the summer of 1936, of six boats as
compared with 1935 and of ten boats as compared with
1934. This is not a healthy situation but it is hoped that
it is only a temporary one, and it probably is explained
by the fact that as the country emerged from the depres-
sion last year many members of the Fleet who had "kept
close to shore" during the depression took advantage of
the better times by going to Europe.
I am informed that applications for houses this year at
Northeast have been coming in very early, and that a
good season is expected, so, undoubtedly, there will be a
sizable increase in the number of boats racing during the
coming summer.
1936 was the tenth consecutive season that I raced at
Northeast and I can say without hesitation that we were
favored with the best weather of any of those seasons and,
consequently, had the best racing. A new rule was made
26
before the season began to the effect that no races in the
July or August series would be postponed to another day
and to take care of what bad weather might do to the
schedule, extra races were added in both months.
On July 10, the day of the first race of the season, it
looked as though the Fleet would get off to an inauspicious
start, for at noon it began to rain with the wind from the
Southeast, but by 1:15 the rain had stopped and the
Fleet went over the starting line at the schedule times for
the different classes and nice races resulted. The records
of the Fleet show that seven out of the eight races scheduled
for the July series, and nine out of the ten races scheduled
for the August series were held and finished within the
time limits for all classes. This makes a total of sixteen
races held in the July and August series which is, I believe,
a Fleet record. The A's and B's had three races around
the Baker's Island course, the 30 Square Meters even
more races. The fact that all the races started were
finished I regard as a tribute to the judgment of our
Secretary in setting the courses. It has proved the
wisdom of leaving the decision to him-and the experience
he gains each year becomes of more and more value to
the Fleet. I found he never hesitated to ask for advice
if he was in doubt, and always lent a willing ear when
suggestions of courses were made to him. The Seal
Harbor Yacht Club Race, the Southwest Harbor Village
Improvement Association Race, the Davenport-Hayward
cup race, the A and B boat team races, and the July and
August cruises were all held on the scheduled days, and
good weather was had on all days of both cruises excepting
only the last day of the August cruise when rain began
27
to fall during the race home from Allen's Cove. Surely
we had a most unusual season. Moreover, the races were
particularly free from flukes caused by the wind dying
out during the race. Only once in carrying out the above
schedule was it necessary to have the fire whistle blown
at Northeast, calling off the race.
Whether the new policy of having no series races post-
poned to another day will prove popular and become
permanent remains to be seen. In the 1928 Annual Fleet
Book the Chairman of the Race Committee thus reported
for the 1927 Season: "Very few of the races were sailed
on the days on which they were scheduled." If we should
have a very foggy Summer with fog seemingly choosing
to pick out the race days, like it did that year, the feeling
of the Fleet towards the new policy would, undoubtedly,
be radically different.
Race week as held in 1936 was not a success and proved
unpopular as was predicted by some of us when asked
to vote upon it. There was too much racing in such a
short space of time to suit the majority of the Fleet,
aggravated perhaps by the fact that there was but little
wind during the mornings of the all day races, which made
those days seem long and the racing monotonous.
It was really surprising how few protests were lodged
during the course of the extensive schedule that was
carried out, and this seems to show that the members of
the Fleet are becoming more conversant each year with
the racing rules and is also a tribute to the spirit of sports-
manship that prevailed amongst the Fleet throughout
the season.
There is no question but that the standardization of
28
sails and spars and the careful measuring of same, and the
adoption of rules by the different Classes, has made for
better and fairer racing, and for this policy the Fleet is
indebted to Mr. Spedden who originated it and insisted
on its being carried out. And Mr. Spedden's knowledge
of racing law again proved invaluable to the Committee
in ruling upon protests.
In concluding I want to express my thanks to the
Commodore, the members of the Race Committee, our
Secretary, Mr. Lunt, the Southwest Harbor Village Im-
provement Association, the Seal Harbor Yacht Club,
and to all the members of the Fleet for their splendid
co-operation in making the 1936 season SO very successful.
Respectfully submitted,
WM. RODMAN FAY

AWARDS AND TROPHIES
The Northeast Harbor Fleet offers in its competitions a
number of trophies, medals, and pennants. Medals and
pennants are awarded to the winner in each class in the
August Series, Annual Cruise, July Cruise, and other
events at the discretion of the Race Committee. Trophies,
which for the most part are offered by friends and members
of the Fleet, are awarded as stated below:
AUGUST SERIES TROPHIES
All August Series trophies, except the Stephen Whitney

An Annual Cruise trophy for the SCHOONER CLASS was
obtained in 1931 from the Fleet treasury. Edward W.
Madeira became the owner of this trophy in 1934. Mr.
Madeira has reoffered this trophy for competition.
*In 1929 a trophy for the Annual Cruise for CLASS S

in 1929. In 1930, 1931, and 1932 the CLASS S Trophy was
bought from the Fleet treasury.
The 30 SQUARE METER Annual Cruise Trophy was

CLASS A in 1928.
The first Annual Cruise Trophy for CLASS B was given

number of points on the Annual Cruise. The 1929 winner
was Mr. Robert K. McInnes. A new CLASS B Cruise
Trophy was presented to the Fleet by Mrs. James Varnum
in 1930. This trophy was retired by Dr. Henry D.
Stebbins in 1936.
The Fleet purchased two Annual Cruise trophies for
CLASS MDI for 1929 and 1930. No award has been made.
Each year Dr. Seth M. Milliken has awarded trophies
to the winners of the race to Blue Hill. These are most
highly contested trophies, and of the most treasured of
the season. They are symbolic not only of a race won,
but of the friendship and good will of Doctor Milliken
toward the Northeast Harbor Fleet.

TROPHIES FOR SPECIAL RACES
The GEORGE DAVENPORT HAYWARD MEMORIAL CUP
was presented in 1925 as a memorial to George Davenport
Hayward, who was Commodore from 1923 to 1925 and
for many years one of the leaders in the building up of
the Northeast Harbor Fleet. His untimely death in 1925
ended a career of great usefulness. As a tribute to him,
his friends subscribed the funds which purchased this
trophy. Each year, on August 17th, Commodore Hay-
ward's birthday, the George Davenport Hayward Me-
morial Cup race is held, and is open to all yachts in the
racing classes of the Fleet. This race is a "chowder"
race; that is, handicaps are given at the start, and the
first yacht to cross the finish line wins. The name of the
winning yacht is engraved on the trophy and the owner
is given a replica.
*A trophy for the ANNUAL SCHOONER RACE was given by
the Fleet in 1929 and won by Mr. Henry Rawle. The
Fleet offered a second trophy in 1930, which was won by
Mr. Walter H. Lippincott, Jr. Mrs. Percy H. Clark pre-
sented a trophy in 1931. Mr. Frederic Camp won this
cup, and the Fleet offered another in 1932, which was won
in 1933 by Mrs. E. G. Stillman.
Mr. A. Atwater Kent, Jr., donated a trophy for the
30 SQUARE METER CLASS in the Southwest Harbor
Village Improvement Association Race in 1931.
The SOUTHWEST HARBOR YACHT CLUB offers annual
trophies for all classes competing in the Southwest Harbor
Yacht Club Race.

GEORGE DAVENPORT HAYWARD MEMORIAL CUP
The Seamanship Cup was presented in 1926 by Miss
Mary C. Wheelwright. The race is open to boys and girls
under 21 years of age sailing yachts of the A Class in
separate divisions. The race involves a problem in sea-
manship. The contestants start at anchor with sails
furled and covered and are given secret instructions in-
volving a problem in seamanship. The solution of the
problem, as well as the handling of the yacht, are deter-
mining factors. The yacht owner winning this race for
two years secures possession of the trophy. The trophy
was won in 1928 by Arthur P. Butler, Jr., and E. Farnham
Butler. Miss Wheelwright donated a new trophy in 1929
which was won by Mr. Reginald C. Robbins, Jr., in 1930.
Miss Wheelwright presented a third trophy in 1931,
William D. Lippincott won this trophy in 1934.
Two beautiful trophies, one for girls and one for boys,
were presented by Miss Wheelwright in 1935.
In 1927 the SEAMAN'S RACE was instituted among the
yachtsmen of Southwest Harbor and in 1928 this race was
