REPORT OF THE COMMODORE
1955
The 1955 Racing Season reflected an improvement in both
weather and participation in our races. In submitting the
Commodore's Report for the year, it seems to me that there
are a number of developments which are worthy of com-
ment.
At the December, 1954, meeting of the Executive Com-
mittee, it was voted to institute a flat racing fee of $75.00
for the season, supplanting the old system of charging on
a per race basis. For the flat fee, a participant is entitled to
enter all regular races and all special events, except the
July and August Cruise. For those not desiring the flat
fee, a charge of $30.00 for the July Series or $35.00 for the
August Series was made, or, a charge of $5.00 per race for
a maximum of four. Under this system, if a member de-
cides not to take the full season rate, individual special races
are charged for separately.
An innovation this year was the institution of a Fourth
of July Series and a Labor Day Series. Over the Fourth of
July and Labor Day weekends, a series of three races were
sailed and prizes awarded to the winners in each class.
The series were conducted as a separate entity from the
rest of the scheduled races, and it is anticipated that this
arrangement will be continued in the future for the Labor
Day weekend and for the Fourth of July when the calendar
is right.
The Sailing Class continued this year on the same basis
as in the past under the direction of the Sailing Master,
11
George Dryver. As had been done previously, the class was
divided into sections of Juniors, Intermediates, and Seniors.
The purpose of the division was to provide each child with
more individual instruction of a type which is particularly
suited to his or her experience and capabilities.
This year, the Executive Committee voted to have the
July Cruise over a weekend, with the start on Friday at
noon. Fleet Runs were made to Winter Harbor for the
first night, Sorrento the second night, and a run to North-
east Harbor on the third day. Church services were held
for skippers and crews on Sunday at Sorrento prior to the
departure of the Fleet for Northeast Harbor. On each of
the days of the Cruise, the Fleet got underway at noon in-
stead of the traditional earlier hour. The purpose of these
changes was to stimulate interest in the July Cruise, since
participation in the event had lagged during the past few
years. The results were gratifying, and there were almost
twice as many boats participating as in previous years. How-
ever, on canvassing the entrants it was felt that there was
no particular advantage in having the Cruise over a week-
end, but the noon start was popular and it is expected that
this feature will be retained.
The August Cruise this year comprised Fleet Runs to
Burnt Coat Harbor on Swan's Island for the first night,
to Blue Hill for the second, and to Northeast Harbor on
the third day. The turnout for the event for excellent, and
since the Eastern Yacht Club had terminated its annual
cruise in Northeast Harbor the previous Saturday, a num-
ber of Eastern vessels joined us on our Cruise.
12
As has frequently been the case in the past, con-
siderable variety was experienced with respect to weather
on the Cruise. The first day's run was sailed in medium
and light airs. Shortly after midnight on the first night, a
severe squall struck the Fleet in Burnt Coat Harbor,
with heavy northerly winds and torrential rain. Although
a
few of the smaller boats dragged anchor, there was vir-
tually no damamge to property. This fortunate circum-
stance was the result of good seamanship and alertness
on the part of the crews and Fleet personnel. The second
day was marked by heavy rain and flat calm in the
morning. The Fleet towed to Ship and Barge's Ledge in
Blue Hill Bay where the Flag Officers had hoped to
start a race for the remainder of the run to Blue Hill.
However, on arrival at Ship and Barge's Bell, flat calm
conditions still prevailed, so it was necessary to tow
the remainder of the way to Blue Hill.
The Fleet was hospitably entertained in Blue Hill by
the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club on the second night, and
the return run to Northeast Harbor was made on the
third day in a strong westerly breeze.
The Commodore wishes to thank the members of the
Fleet who agreed to allow their power boats to act as
Fleet Escorts during the August Cruise. For over twenty
years, the Coast Guard has provided an escort for our
cruises, but a change in their policy has now made this
impossible. Therefore, it was necessary to request the
services of some of our growing power boat squadron to
13
serve instead. The arrangement was most satisfactory, and
it is hoped that it will continue in future seasons.
The thanks of the Flag Officers and entire member-
ship are due to Jim Ducey, who makes the Northeast Har-
bor Fleet his year round concern. His enthusiasm and able
leadership do much to make our racing and sailing class
activities a success. A word of appreciation and thanks
must also go to Phil Caughey and Marion Salisbury who
have conscientiously and loyally handled our office work.
In conclusion, it should be brought to the attention of
the membership that the participation in our races showed
an improvement in 1955 over the previous year. This rep-
resents a reversal of a trend, and it is to be earnestly
hoped that interest and enthusiasm will continue to grow.
Respectfully submitted,
HARRY R. . NEILSON, JR.
Commodore

Accountants and Auditors - Management Consultants
Boston, March 23, 1956
To the Executive Committee of
The Northeast Harbor Fleet
We have examined the balance sheet of The Northeast
Harbor Fleet as at December 31, 1955, and the related
statement of income, expense and capital for the years
ended December 31, 1955 and 1954. Our examination was
made in accordance with generally accepted auditing stand-
ards, and accordingly included such tests of the accounting
records and such other auditing procedures as we considered
necessary in the circumstances.
Plant and equipment accounts are carried on the books
without deduction for depreciation. They do not include
all plant and equipment assets, certain expenditures for
such assets having been charged off against capital ex-
penditure fund or current income. The investment in Clif-
ton Dock Corporation is carried on the books at nominal
value.
In our opinion, the accompanying balance sheet and
statement of income, expense and capital, subject to the
qualifications in the preceding paragraphs, present fairly
the financial position of The Northeast Harbor Fleet at
December 31, 1955, and the results of its operations for
the years ended December 31, 1955 and 1954, in confor-
mity with generally accepted accounting principles ap-
plied on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.
