REPORT OF THE COMMODORE
1956
The 1956 Racing Season reflected an encouraging increase
in the total number of yachts participating in scheduled
series races and special races. The totals for the year show
478 boats racing in series races as against 473 in 1955. The
net increase, however, was somewhat larger since the 1955
figures include the Fourth of July Series which was not
scheduled in 1956 because the holiday did not fall on a
weekend. These figures compare very favorably with 1954,
when the total was only 340 for scheduled Series Races.
An increase from 79 in 1955 to 104 was recorded for
total participation in Special Races in 1956. These figures
are most heartening, since the Special Races provide varia-
tion and increased enthusiasm, especially among some of
our younger members.
The July Cruise showed a drop in participation this
season from eighteen to ten competitors. However, special
effort was made last year to interest skippers in the event,
and the Cruise was scheduled over a weekend. The week-
end feature was not repeated in 1956.
An innovation this year was the extension of the August
Cruise from three to four days. A poll conducted at the
conclusion of the 1955 season showed a majority of the
members voting to be in favor of the extension. In breaking
down the results of the poll into those members who actually
sailed on the Cruises as opposed to those who are not parti-
cipants, the majority of the sailors was strongly in favor of
the four day event.
Participation in the 1956 Cruise was off slightly from the
1955 event, but this decrease may be explained by the fact
11
that last year the Eastern Yacht Club terminated its Annual
Cruise in Northeast Harbor a few days before the beginning
of the Fleet Cruise. As a result, a number of Eastern
Yachts sailed with us on one or more Fleet Runs. In 1956,
it was not possible to arrange the schedule so that Eastern
could join us. We hope, however, to invite them again in
the near future.
The Sailing Class was under the direction of Mr. and
Mrs. Peter Mezey during the season. As in the past, a
program of morning races was instituted to give the older
children a chance to compete among themselves as well as
in the regular series races. Participation in the morning
races increased by 10%, while Sailing Class membership
was up approximately 35%. It is always encouraging to
see increased enthusiasm among the younger members, for,
in future years, they will be the mainstay of our racing.
It would not have been possible to have had the successful
season we did without the generosity of those members who
lent their Bullseyes for the Sailing Class. A similar vote
of thanks must also be extended to the volunteer helpers in
the sailing class, the donors of the afternoon punches, and
the owners of the power boats who have helped us in ways
too numerous to mention.
The Fleet recorded with regret the death of Edward W.
Madeira on June 8, 1956. Commodore Madeira was one
of the founders of the Fleet, having served as Vice-Commo-
dore from 1923 to 1925 and as Commodore from 1925 to
1927. Having always been an enthusiastic sailor, he kept
up his active interest in Fleet affairs after ill health forced
his retirement from racing. One can add nothing to the
moving tribute paid him by his friend and contemporary,
Mr. Charles Dickey at the Annual Meeting on September 1st.
12
Commodore Madeira's friendly counsel will be missed by
all of us.
In retiring as Commodore, I would like to thank Jim
Ducey, who carries the problems of the Fleet with him
throughout the year, for his help and guidance. His enthu-
siasm and energy are largely responsible for the smooth
operation of the Fleet. I would also like to thank Phil
Caughey and Marion Salisbury, who have done a marvelous
job in the office and in many other ways.
Respectfully submitted,
HARRY R. NEILSON, JR.
Commodore

Accountants and Auditors - Management Consultants
Boston, February 18, 1957
To the Executive Committee of
The Northeast Harbor Fleet
We have examined the balance sheet of The Northeast
Harbor Fleet as at December 31, 1956, and the related state-
ments of income, expense and capital for the years ended
December 31, 1956 and 1955. Our examination was made
in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards,
and accordingly included such tests of the accounting records
and such other auditing procedures as we considered neces-
sary in the circumstances.
Plant and equipment accounts are carried on the books
without deduction for depreciation. They do not include
all plant and equipment assets, certain expenditures for such
assets having been charged off against capital expenditure
fund or current income. The investment in Clifton Dock
Corporation is carried on the books at nominal value.
In our opinion, the accompanying balance sheet and com-
parative statement of income, expense and capital, subject
to the qualifications in the preceding paragraphs, present
fairly the financial position of The Northeast Harbor Fleet
at December 31, 1956, and the results of its operations for
the years ended December 31, 1956 and 1955, in conformity
with generally accepted accounting principles applied each
year on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.
