1938 AUGUST CRUISE
Actaea
Here is the finish of the August Cruise of 1938, second day, morning race.
Actaea, a sloop owned by Henry Sears of Boston, is winning Class X, the
larger cruising class. The 1938 cruise was the sixteenth annual August cruise;
the first was in 1922 (the year before the Fleet was formally brought into
existence). We can't be sure where the cruise went the first night, but we can
be sure that on the second day they sailed to Morgan Bay, the location of the
Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club, and had lunch. One can see Long Island on
the left shore of the picture and Tinkers Island in the distance, which is the
view from the approach to Morgan Bay in north Blue Hill Bay. Then they
sailed back in the afternoon to wherever they had spent the previous night,
then sailing home the next day.
There were thus four races in all, and the winner in each class got 100 points.
Actaea won 377 out of a possible 400 points and won the cup. Henry Rawle
was the Commodore in 1938 and must have agreed to the dates and destina-
tion for the cruise. Harry Haskell was Rear Commodore and Arnold Lunt was
Secretary, SO I'm sure they had input. The Executive Committee used to decide
the cruise details every year in those early days of the August Cruise which has
become the backbone of the Downeast Race Week Events of today.

The Commodore's Report 2004
I am pleased to report that the 2004 season was successful. All activities
sponsored by The Northeast Harbor Fleet enjoyed increased participation.
The weather was not always cooperative which often challenged our agile
staff and forced many of us to be flexible. However, as we reflect on the
summer, very few events had to be cancelled. I want to thank all of the
members who volunteer their precious free time to make the summer
enjoyable for all of us. Also, the Fleet staff, ably managed by Greg
Wilkinson, must be congratulated for coping with unpredictable weather and
a tight calendar in which to fit all of our scheduled events.
The vitality of any organization such as The Northeast Harbor Fleet is
ultimately measured by the strength of its membership. This summer we had
more members participating in myriad events both in The Great Harbor and
at far away venues. Furthermore, the continued growth of our club with the
addition of new members is another sign that The Fleet is healthy and has a
bright future.
Before I get into the details of the season just past I want to highlight two
important awards that were given at the Annual Meeting in August. We had
the unique opportunity to honor one of our most senior members and one of
our youngest members for their outstanding contribution to The Fleet and
the sport of sailing. Please take a moment to read the complete descrip-
tions of these members and the awards they received that are included in the
Annual Report
Harry R. Madeira was presented with the The Charles D. Dickey
Memorial Award for recognition of his significant contributions to
the Fleet over a period of years with particular note to his leadership
of Clifton Dock Corporation.
5
Amory Loring was presented with The Kevin P. Mahaney Award
for recognition of her contributions to the sport of sailing in venues
beyond Mount Desert Island. Amory completed her collegiate sailing
career at Dartmouth by being named an All American Crew for the
2nd time.
A number of years ago, the Fleet's Executive Committee identified the need
to create continuity in the management structure of the organization. We
endeavored to bring to Northeast Harbor an individual that would enable us
to offer the membership excellent racing, a superior junior training program
and consistent quality of services. The 2004 season marked the 5th season
that Greg Wilkinson has been our General Manager. This summer the man-
agement of the Fleet was enhanced with the addition of Sarah Wilkinson;
running the office and administrative aspects of the Fleet. The office was
open 6 days a week. The land based operations were the smoothest in recent
memory. The waterfront services were excellent with launch service running
7 days a week. On the race course Greg and his race management team had
to deal with adverse weather much of the summer. However, all scheduled
Fleet series races and special events were run. The only exception was the
cancellation of the final race of the August Cruise due to the remnants of
Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricane Charley.
Some of the highlights of the 2004 season include:
The Fleet and Sailing School hosting a 420 racing clinic and a Green
Fleet (novice) Optimist clinic prior to the July 4th opening. These
events were well attended and attracted juniors from outside Northeast
Harbor. Later in the month we hosted a US Optimist National Team
Racing Clinic that attracted 50 sailors from across New England.
One of the highlights of July was Fleet Night. We were privileged to
host Bruce and Leanne Dyson with their new 8 meter Pleione. Bruce
built Pleione in his own shop. The 5 year project culminated with a
May 2004 launch. The Dysons were in Northeast accompanying the
Eastern Yacht Club Cruise which served as Pleione's racing debut.
At least 50 members were able to tour Pleione while she was at the
Fleet dock. There were fewer members under the tent for Bruce's
slide show but the word from all those that attended was that it was
a great evening.
6
The Fleet hosted the Maine State Optimist Pram Championship July
15-16 with 55 juniors from across the state attending the event. The
weather was not great but Race Committee Chairman; Greg Wilkinson
was able to get all races in by towing the fleet up Somes Sound.
The Barton Eddison Race was a huge success this year. The Fleet and
IOD Class hosted 65 juniors from all of the junior sailing programs
in the Great Harbor on 11 IODs. Reports from the event are that
juniors, instructors and IOD owners all had a good time.
There was renewed interest in Mercury Racing with an average of
8 Mercs on the line during the July series.
Participation in the MDI Series/PHRF racing increased thanks to Hal
Kroeger and Steve Homer.
Down East Race Week and the August Cruise were a focus this year.
We wanted to increase participation by members in both racing
and social events. The Fleet hosted the Lay Day dinner with great
success: 110 racers enjoyed dinner and refreshments under the tent in
the parking lot. This was made possible through the able leadership
of Mike Chace and Hal Kroeger.
In the annual team race against Kollegewidgewok, for the Red
Gauntlet Trophy the team of David Rockefeller, John Henry and Tom
Fremont-Smith with some excellent crew, smashed the KYC team in
their Atlantic Class Sloops on Blue Hill Bay.
A number of our members ventured beyond the shores of Mt Desert
to compete in events such as:
a. Optimist Pram Regattas both in New England and Texas
b. Bermuda Race Week in IOD's
C. The Bermuda Race
d. Nantucket Invitational in IOD's
e. The IOD World Championship at Fisher's Island, NY
7
Finally, it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve you and the Fleet as
Commodore. This institution has a great history and tradition. Thank you for
entrusting me with this responsibility. I am confident that it will be in good
hands going forward. The new team lead by Commodore Gary Madeira is
able and will serve the Fleet well.
Fair sailing,

2004 CHARLES D. DICKEY MEMORIAL AWARD RECIPIENT
Harry Madeira has had a long association with the Northeast Harbor Fleet
beginning in 1934. Mr. Madeira has skippered various boats over the years
from the wooden Bullseye Chizzle, International #2 Auriga, Daybreak, Legacy

In addition, Mr. Madeira served as President of Clifton Dock Corporation
for many years until he stepped down in 2004. As President of Clifton Dock
Corporation, Mr. Madeira's foresight, energy and acumen brought into reality
the vision of the Corporations' founders and made the Dock a vibrant asset
of the community of Northeast Harbor, providing valuable services to both
the residents of the town and visiting yachtsmen. On August 28, 2004 the
Board of Directors of Clifton Dock Corporation elected Harry R. Madeira
as its' first Honorary Director to serve in this capacity at his pleasure.
In recognition of Mr. Madeira's significant contributions to the community,

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT
December 15, 2004
To the Executive Committee of
The Northeast Harbor Fleet
Northeast Harbor, Maine
We have audited the accompanying statement of financial position of the Northeast Harbor
Fleet as of September 30, 2004 and 2003, and the related statements of activities and cash
flows for the years then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the
management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements
based on our audits.
We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the
United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audits to
obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material
misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the
amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the
accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as
evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audits provide
a reasonable basis for our opinion.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material
respects, the financial position of the Northeast Harbor Fleet as of September 30, 2004 and
2003, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the years then ended in
conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

10th Annual Downeast Race Week
DERW's 10th anniversary year was just what it should have been. We had
over 35 competitors in six scheduled races, five of which were successfully
run, and good weather except for the last day. Shore side activities were
well attended and well hosted by the North Haven Casino and the Northeast
Harbor Fleet.
West Penobscot Bay Race (WPBR), August 7 - DERW started with the
skippers' meeting and reception at the North Haven Casino, coordinated
by Commodore Mitch Cabot, assisted by Pete DuPont on Friday evening,
August 6th. Saturday the 7th dawned clear with a light norther blowing in
the Fox Island Thorofare, which meant a start out into West Penobscot Bay.
The course led us south to Buoy RW FT Moa Bell at the western entrance to
the Thorofare , thence north around Vinalhaven, thence southerly to finish
off Babbidge Island ledges at the eastern end of the Thorofare. As the race
progressed the norther died leaving several boats stranded. A southerly then
filled in that served to re-connect the fleet somewhat, but the die was basically
cast and finishing positions did not change much. The shortened race ended
off Bald Island in East Penobscot Bay. Division 1 honors went to Pequot,
a Hinckley 44, owned by Bevin Cherot. In Division 2, Bob Johnstone was
first in his new Tern, a J-100. Divisions 3 and 4 raced together for the series
and line honors were taken by Milady, a Sabre 34 owned by Chris Jennings.
Most of the boats then proceeded on the strength of an evening Souwester,
eastward for the night into the Deer Isle Thorofare or Merchant's Row through
a maze of lobsterpots that shone brightly in the late afternoon sun.
The Nevin Cup, August 8 & 9 - Day one of the Nevin Cup dawned clear
and calm and many boats could be seen converging on the Eggemoggin
Reach as they powered up from their overnight anchorages. The start was
off at RW EE Bell at the eastern end of the Reach. From there we proceeded
northwest up the Reach to Torrey Castle, thence, in a building souwester
southeast we sailed into Jericho Bay to Egg Rock. From there Divisions 3 &
4 beat south to Southern Mark Island Ledge and Divisions 1 & 2 went several
miles farther before turning back to RWEE Bell. The daily wind had built to
15-18 knots as we rounded to RWEE to head for the finish at Torrey Castle.
It was a well planned race and all four classes were close together at the finish
with the full fleet finishing within a few minutes of each other. Whiplash,
the immaculate J-35 skippered by Ted Smith; Cybele, David Rockefeller, Jr.
C2
and Rick Burnes' flashy red IMX 45 and Revolution, a Farr 43 owed by Ed
Rogers competed smartly at the finish with Alan Joseph in his newly owned
Hot Numbers, a red Taylor 42 but line honors went to Weather Gauge, a
Farr 44 owned by Stockton Smith in Division 1, Otter, a Sabre 38 skippered
by Henry Becton and Rusty Duym in Division 2, and Ariana, an Ohlson 42
skippered by Jeff Becton in Divisions 3&4 combined. The Fleet retired to
Benjamin River for the night.
Day 2 again brought light south westerly breezes that strengthened during
the day. Starting at Torrey Castle, the fleet proceeded south through the
reefs to Long Ledge Bell at the eastern end of the Deer Isle Thorofare with
Divisions 1 and 2 going further south, thence northerly on a spinnaker leg
through The Pond Island Passage in to Blue Hill Bay to finish between Bar
and Trumpet Islands. Winds peaked at 20 knots at the finish with the smaller
boats finishing first on their shorter course. Looking back from our posi-
tion on Lara, a Hinckley 42, skippered by Charles Hoppin and Mike Chace,
Division 1 & 2 paraded by in full cry. Reindeer, skippered by Newbold
Smith treated us to a dramatic spinnaker blow out and smart reset at the fin-
ish. The three J-42's, Merlin owned by Mark Cluett, Finesse owned by Newt
Merrill and Eventyr owned by Gordon Haaland all finished neck and neck but
line honors again went to Stockton Smith repeating a first place on Weather
Gauge in Division1. Far Out, a custom Morris 52 skippered by Hal Kroeger
put in an impressive performance for his first year in the regatta by winning
Division 2 and Jeffrey Becton in Ariana, repeated his first in Divisions 3 &
4 combined. At the finish of the Nevin Cup the Fleet dispersed to various
points in the Great Sound of Mount Desert.
Lay Day Dinner and Awards, August 10 - Henry Brauer, Commodore and
Hal Kroeger hosted a Lay Day dinner for 140 people The Northeast Harbor
Fleet and prizes were given out for the first three days with much merri-
ment. At this point we said "Thanks and goodbye," to Win Fowler, who with
Ben Welles of the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club provided us with such great
courses and race management in the first three days and turned Committee
Boat responsibilities over to Greg Wilkinson of the Northeast Harbor Fleet
and its Committee Boat, the Shearwater.
August Cruise, August 11-13 - With Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricane
Charley to the south, it was decided to forego a planned race into Frenchman
Bay and keep the August Cruise closer to home. For Day 1 Greg Wilkinson
C3
set a nice windward leeward into a 5-10 knot southerly course that took
us from Mount Desert Island out the Western Way south past Long Ledge
Gong rounding Black Island to port. Divisions 1 & 2 went farther south and
then we all turned north returning through the Western Way, finishing in the
center of the great Sound of Mount Desert. Line honors went to Reindeer
and Newbold Smith in Division 1. Division 2 honors went again to Hal
Kroeger in Far Out and in Division 3 & 4 combined Jeff Becton picked up
his third bullet of the series.
Day 2 of the August Cruise saw us again starting on a long course
from Northeast Harbor, heading south out the Western Way, this time
leaving Black Island to starboard, thence proceeding northwesterly into Blue
Hill bay to Ship and Barges Ledge Gong for Division 3 and 4 and Tinker
Island for Divisions 1 & 2, thence southerly to finish at RW CP Bell at the
eastern end of Casco Passage. Winds from the southwest built to 20-25 knots
providing all with a spectacular rail down beat to the finish. In first place
were Stockton Smith on Weather Gauge, Robert Johnstone on Tern and Ariana
skippered by Jeff Becton taking her 4th win.
With the remnants of Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricane Charley fast
approaching, the fleet ducked in to the small natural harbor in the lee of
Orono Island for the night. The winds built to 30 knots during the night and
rose to 35kts., bringing torrential rains the next day. The Regatta Committee
decided to cancel the final race on the advice of the Committee Boat. The
fleet had an exciting dispersal to their home ports in increasingly lumpy chop
and visibility of less than 1/4 mile. At the awards ceremony at the Northeast
Harbor Fleet that afternoon, the consensus was that we had had a great series
worthy of our 10th year.

The 79th George Davenport Hayward Cup Race
The George Davenport Hayward Cup was given to the Northeast Harbor Fleet
in memory of its first Commodore. The race is a handicap event in which
all of the Fleet's traditional classes of keel boats are eligible to participate:
International One Design, J-24, Luders-16, A-boat, Mercury, and Bullseye
(wooden and fiberglass). The race course is a measured distance which all
classes must sail. The start is staggered such that the smaller boats start first,
and the larger boats start last. The first boat to cross the finish line wins.

Junior Sailing 2004
Ever since its founding, the Northeast Harbor Fleet has recognized the
importance of teaching and encouraging young people to enjoy sailing. Today,
these ambitions are carried out by the Northeast Harbor Sailing School, a
separate organization which operates on the grounds of the Northeast Harbor
Fleet, using instructional watercraft owned by the Fleet.
The Fleet in collaboration with the Sailing School offers a variety of
racing and other sailing experiences for junior sailors. These events include
experiences aboard the wide variety of boats owned by members of the Fleet.
The Fleet and the Sailing School would like to thank all of the owners of
the boats provided for the W. Barton Eddison Race, and say a special "thank
you" as well to Charles Butt for the Rebecca visit, pictured below.

Commodore William Barton Eddison Trophy
W. Barton Eddison was the third Commodore of the Northeast Harbor Fleet,
serving in that capacity from 1928-1935. He is generally regarded as the
individual who introduced the Norwegian-designed International One Design
(IOD) class of sailboat to Mount Desert Island.
Each year the Fleet sponsors a race in his memory intended to introduce junior
sailors to the IOD class. Effort is made to structure the race as a traditional
point-to-point event, versus the more contemporary windward/leeward,
"around the buoys" style event. IOD owners, or their representative, are
aboard their boats during the race, but the juniors are encouraged to execute
the sail trimming, and are frequently encouraged to steer.
Beginning in 2002, junior sailors enrolled in other area sailing programs were
invited to participate in the event. With this expanded pool of junior sailors,
the format was further modified to mix kids from different programs into the
crews of each boat to further enrich the social aspect of the event.
The Commodore William Barton Eddison Trophy was given to The Northeast
Harbor Fleet in 1983 by his children.
