NOTICES
Summer of 1943
Notices
,
THE NORTHEAST HARBOR FLEET
NORTHEAST HARBOR
MAINE
This notice is intended to outline the prospects
for the Fleet and to make it easier for the members of the
Fleet to plan for the coming Summer.
Racing is expected to continue much as it was
last Summer. The Coast Guard has added no further
restrictions, and fleets in other localities plan to
continue as usual. It is felt that sailing is a most
economical and profitable recreation.
The Fleet has been notified that, barring unfore-
seen events, the yacht yards of both E. Farnum Butler and
Henry R. Hinckley will be able to handle our boats as
usual. However, they both stress the need of sufficient
notice. It is urged that they be notified before the end
of April to avoid disappointment later. Owners who have
not yet planned for the Summer would do well to condition
their boats anyway to make charters possible.
During the coming summer the Fleet will operate
the Rock End dock, which otherwise would not have opened.
The Fleet intends to use the dock as its Headquarters.

Sailing Instruction Notice
With the hope of stimulating interest in sailing and racing
at Northeast Harbor, the Fleet is fortunate in again having the
services of Mr. . Harvey Kelley to direct dail ailing instruction
classes during the coming season.
The program will be conducted on the same basis as that of
last year with the classes open to any child irrespective of mem-
bership in the Fleet. The charge for the season, which is from
July 15 through the month of August, will again be ten dollars,
which entitles the child to sail each week-day during that period.
Sailing will be done in Bull's Eyes provided by the Fleet
and instruction will include use of the tender, getting boat
ready for sailing, actual sailing with each child taking his turn
at the helm and sheets, finally picking up mooring and furling
sail.
On stormy days the class will be held indoors with such
things as knot tying, compass points, and reading of charts taken
up.
Further information may be obtained at the Fleet office on
the Rockend Dock.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL TROPHY
A special trophy has been donated to The Northeast Harbor
Fleet by Mr. Jarvis Cromwell to be sailed for under the follow-
ing conditions:
"To be awarded to that boat in the A Class with the high- -
est average points for races sailed in the August Series,
provided that the boat has taken part in at least two races,
and in those races was sailed by the owner himself or by one
of his immediate family".
The Northeast Harbor Fleet has had a well-deserved reputation
for good racing by keen sailors.
Our Racing Rules are based on the ordinary customs of the sea,
designed to avoid collision, together with additions necessary to
meet special conditions of yacht racing. The more important rules
are clearly set forth in the Fleet's book of RACING INSTRUCTIONS.
All members of the Fleet should know and observe these instructions
in racing.
The Race Committee feels there have been too many violations
of the racing rules due, porhaps, to a mistaken feeling that racing
in these war days need not be taken seriously. This is a wrong at-
titude and makes for sloppy racing.
For good racing every skipper must know his rights, and stand
up for them. On the other hand a yacht clearly at fault should im-
mediately withdraw, in fairness to others raoing. It is imperative
such withdrawal take place when a collision occurs or a mark of the
course is touched.
