February 8, 1980 Dear Mum Just got your letter of January 19, in a massive mail delivery inspired, we suspect, by the visit of several clergyman. on the Christian side, we had Monsignor Nolan- (Noland?) of the Pontifical Mission to Palestine, and Archbishop Cappuchi, a Greek Catholic (or Orthodox) prelate well-known for his persecution at the hands of the Israelis. They said that they were reporting to the Pope. On The Muslim side, the Son of the Imam Khomeini. Most impressive. We were all impressed by Dr. Coffin, and I'm glad that you all got through to him personally. I had hoped (in fact, we had been told) that he would bring back the Christmas Cards, I'm Sorry that you had to wait so long to hear from me directly. Hopefully, the mails will improve. I have how received three letter from you, The description of the Puerto Rican assembly was very moving. In your last letter, I was delighted to read of the change in Mark. My message to him was calculated, as you might imagine, to have just that maturing effect. In his last letter (of January 22) he gives me news of Jessica, so it things are broken off between them, he doesn't want me Page 2 to know about it. Least said, I would love to see Louisa on TV , I'm sure her voice must be very distinctive, and effective, as indeed is her whole personality. The fascinating aspect of this whole experience is one's capacity to grow. Not that one really changes, but challenges of this kind evoke qualities that one didn't know one had.
