Rugosa

From collection Watercraft

The MDI Class sloops were designed by Ralph Winslow in 1924 and 16 were constructed to teach the children of Mount Desert Island summer residents to sail. The Rugusa, MDI Class boat #16, was originally owned by Sandy Kellog of Bar Harbor. It was the last built in the class ,1925. A later owner, in the 1930s, was Mary Smith of Greenings Island. Later in the 1950s it was owned by Rev. Palfred Perkins of Southwest Harbor who changed the name from Red Jacket to Lillibet. Toby Strong of Southwest Harbor purchased it from Perkins later selling it to Sturgis Haskins. It was the last MDI left on Mt. Desert Island, with the nearest two at the Penobscot Marine Museum, in Searsport, and on an island in Penobscot Bay owned by the Porters.
