St. James-in-the-Woods was built in 1903 for a small community of quarrymen and their families. Used intermittently, it was secularized and sold in 1987. ("Parish History" at The Parish of St. Mary and St. Jude [ https://maryjude.org/parish-history/ : accessed 23 August 2025]). "While saving the century-old aesthetics, St James-in-the-Woods, an early 1900 Episcopal Chapel, was made into a home in 1998. The project involved an extensive renovation. Inside, a timber-frame truss system of rough-hewn spruce supports the partial 2nd floor. The 2nd floor, with its 2 bedrooms, balcony & bathroom, has a treehouse feel and affords an intimate view of the cathedral ceiling and grand Gothic window in the living room. A master bedroom, full bath & kitchen fit neatly under the framed-in2nd floor. The chapel's half basement was dug out to accommodate family, laundry & utility rooms. The stone building features English Tudor-style gables; their stucco incorporates local pink granite pebbles" ("2 Giant Slide Rd, Mount Desert, ME 04660" at Zillow [ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2-Giant-Slide-Rd-Mount-Desert-ME-04660/91846730_zpid/ : accessed 23 August 2025]).
