Barnard Township is within the Northeast Piscataquis Unorganized Territory. "Originally, neighboring Williamsburg and Barnard were one, within Number Six Range Eight township. A large swamp running through the center of Williamsburg separated the settlements, and presented natural inconveniences which led to a separation. In 1834 the original township was split when Barnard and Williamsburg each became incorporated towns" ( "Barnard Township" at Maine: An Encyclopedia ( https://maineanencyclopedia.com/barnard-township/ : accessed 22 August 2025). USGS refers to Barnard Plantation as the preferred placename and Township as an altnernate, but most other sources favor Barnard Township. (Township and plantation are different forms of government in Maine.
