Historical Context
The name Salem (meaning peace) was substituted for Naumkeag at a meeting of the General Court convened in June 1629. The town of was settled by Moravians Roger Conant and John Endecott. Settled 1626-28, incorporated as a town in 1680, and as a city in 1836 (MA-T1/p41).
