President Carter appointed him as the 15th U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and the State Department Spokesman. During the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis he appeared regularly on network news broadcasts giving updates on the crisis. He also met with hostage families to give them updates.
