From collection College of the Atlantic College of the Atlantic Timeline List (Timeline #1)
The All College Meeting, COA’s communal governance system, voted to adopt two radical sustainability policies in 2017. The first, The Discarded Resources and Material Management Framework, focuses on waste management, with a goal of 90% waste diversion by 2025 according to COA’s 12 Zero Waste Principles: reduce, reuse, repair, redesign, repurpose, replenish, research, reach-out, refuse, reconsider, remember and recycle. The framework emphasises reduced material consumption and increased reuse of resources. The second policy passed was the Energy Framework, which has a goal of a fossil free campus by 2030. The Energy Framework covers goals for building heating, emissions from COA’s vehicle fleet and energy efficiency for the college’s farms and islands. The focus areas of the policy include reduced fossil fuel use, reduced energy consumption, generation of electricity, addressing of greenhouse gas emissions, education, experimentation, monitoring, reporting, revising and funding. Both the Energy Framework and the Discarded Resources and Material Management Framework are important guidelines for achieving COA’s energy and waste goals, and maintaining an actively sustainable campus.
