Death Notice of Lewis Somes Jr
OBITUARY
t
In the death of Lewis Somes which
occurred at the home of the deceased
on lower Main street, Monday after-
noon, at half past two. This town
loses one of its oldest and most highly
respected citizens. He had been in
comparatively good health all win-
ter, when a week before he died he
was stricken with La Grippe.
Lewis Somes was born in Mount
Desert, Feb. 12, 1832, the only child
of Lewis Somes and Mary Ann Somes
(nee Mary Ann Townsend)
His
childhood days were spent wholly in
this village which has always been
his home, receiving his education in
the common schools. Nothing of
particular significance seem to mark
his boyhood days, only his great de-
votion to his mother, who was in poor
health for many years. This charm-
ing quality in his character was often
commented upon by his friends.
During his younger days he assist-
ed his father in the boot and shoe bus-
iness, and they were widely known
for the excellent quality of their fin-
ished products, as well as their work
manship. At the age of eighteen
he entered the employ of the Maine
Coast Survey, in which he remained
four yars two of which were spent on
Green Mountain and the remaining
two in different parts of Maine. Fol-
lowing this he was two years mana-
ger of the woolen mill in Somesville,
which has long since ceased to ex-
ist. From this period until the time
of his marriage he held two offices
in the town, those of road commis-
sioner, and town clerk.
On June 12, 1863 he was united in
marriage to Emma King Newman,
daughter of Samuel Newman and
Nancy Newman of Seawall, Maine.
To this upion three children work
born, Mrs. Bridgham FeranId of this
place, Mr. Arthur Somes of South-
west Harbor and Mrs. Isaiah Ober of
Hordwick, Ve. For the first two
years of his married life he was over-
seer of a woolen mill in Ellsworth,
Maine, and following this he was for
two years in the same business in
Buxton, Maine. Owing to his fath-
er's failing health he returned to his
home and took up his business in
which he was very actively engaged
until witihn a few years of his death.
On Feb. 14, 1892 occurred the death
of his wife, leaving the duties of the
home upon ihs young daughter Mary.
For five years she strove faithfully
to fill her mother's uplace and with
the help and encouragement she re-
ceived from her father, this great
responsibility became a pleasure,
and those five years of devotion to
each other will ever be cherished by
the daughter now left to mourn one
who was to her a father and mother
in truth.
On April 2, 1897 Mr.
Somes was united in marriage to Em-
ma J. Somes of this place.
He never sought public recognition
but was loved by old and young for
his genial friendliness and unassum-
ing manner. His dominating char-
acteristic was unselfishness, and dur
ing his last sicknés his constant and
most urgent wish was that his illness
might terminate soon, that he be as
little care and burden as possible to
others. Mr. Somes became a mem-
ber of the Somesville Congregational
church two years ago. The funeral
occurred Thursday afternoon, Rev.
J. N. Walker officiating, and was at-
tended bv a large delegation of neigh-
bors and business men. The
inter-
ment was at Brookside Cemetery.
Among those from out of town were
Mrs. Frazier, Mr. and Mrk. Jacobson
of Northeast Harbor, Mrs. Knox and
Russell of Rden
