Dear Dr. Grindle: The land on which Fort Knox, Maine, is located was deeded to the United States on September 4, 1843. This land was bought by the United States for the purpose of erecting fortifications and other purposes of National defense. We have been unable to find the exact date of the construction of the fort, but we assume that it was erected not long after the sale was negotiated. Yours truly, Frederic J.
