General Note
In Maine, a township is a defined geographic area, lying within the state’s unorganized territories, that does not have a local government. State government handles taxation and most services within these 420+ minor civil divisions, which encompass slightly over one-half the area of the entire State of Maine. Some sources (i.e., Wikipedia and Google Maps) group the townships into larger divisions, each labeled an “Unorganized Territory” (abbreviated as “UT”).
