Kebo Valley Club to Toll House (trail), crosses Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME

An early BHVIA route from Kebo Valley Club up lower northern slope of Cadillac Mountain to intersect with the Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail (#34) near site of former "tollhouse". Route also continued to Eagle Lake via unmarked routes #318 and #317. Seldom used route can still be followed and has extensive stonework. Route crosses park loop road and has some steps, then a road-like flat section. Continues up hill but no distinctive craftsmanship for a while. Route then has a long section of slab laid steps, some with and some without coping stones. Steps continue then become stone paving, then route goes on to lichen covered ledges, with views of Bar Harbor and mountains. Route ascends one more step, probably for guidance, to meet the current North Ridge Trail (#34). CJ, MB

The 1902 BHVIA 13th An. Rpt. states "A new path leading from the back gate of the Kebo Valley Club has been laid out over the ridge of Green to the Toll House, in order to avoid the dusty walk by road to this point."The route is listed on a Bar Harbor Real Estate map (no date) as the "Ridge Path."The path is still marked on the 1951 NPS Road and Trail System Plan (part of a master plan).

Significance

The historic trail system of Acadia National Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its national significance and ties to the history of Mount Desert Island and establishment of the park. The system's period of significance starts in 1844 and ends in 1942. The listing encompasses 109 trails traversing 117 miles on Mount Desert Island (some extending outside the park) and includes 18 memorial plaques, 12 viewpoints, and unique engineering features.
