Hunters Beach Trail, Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME

An easy and lightly used coastal path that is 3-5’ wide. The route starts in the woods from Cooksie Drive, crosses Hunters Brook, and ends at Hunters Beach Cove. Trail makes one bridge crossing and one unstructured stream crossing. This is a wonderful path to a beautiful and secluded cobble beach. DK, KJ, SB, MB, GJS

Historical Context

Shown on the 1893 Rand map and 1896 path map as a wood road. Shown on the 1903 path map as a path. In 1902 The path was extended to Little Hunters Beach, the next cove to the east (see trail #436). In 1937 a parking lot was constructed along the road by the CCC as described by the park's landscape architect B. L. Breeze (CCC records, National Archives).

Significance

The historic trail system of Acadia National Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its national significance and ties to the history of Mount Desert Island and establishment of the park. The system's period of significance starts in 1844 and ends in 1942. The listing encompasses 109 trails traversing 117 miles on Mount Desert Island (some extending outside the park) and includes 18 memorial plaques, 12 viewpoints, and unique engineering features.
