Hemlock Road/Spring Road Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME

From the northern end of Sieur de Monts parking area, north to intersect with the Hemlock Trail (323), Stratheden Path (#24), and Jesup Path (#14) to end at the park loop road. Broad, raised, gravel surfaced but overgrown road through hemlock stand then Great Meadow, where the road is lined with birch trees. Road has a concrete spillway in the middle of Great Meadow, where water flows over and under, possibly undermining the structure. Road contains steel corrugated pipe culverts without headwalls. Lightly used by meadow birdwatchers, provies level easy tread where people can walk side by side. A lesser used section extends south towards the Sieur de Monts Spring House, passing the entrance to the Homans Path (#349). MB

Significance

The historic trail system of Acadia National Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its national significance and ties to the history of Mount Desert Island and establishment of the park. The system's period of significance starts in 1844 and ends in 1942. The listing encompasses 109 trails traversing 117 miles on Mount Desert Island (some extending outside the park) and includes 18 memorial plaques, 12 viewpoints, and unique engineering features.
