Gurnee Path Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME
This no longer marked and seldom used, easy trail starts just north of the Lower Duck Brook Bridge, on the west side of Route 3 and gradually ascends by a raised treadway along bluffs above Route 3 then descends, ending near Canoe Point. With extensive stonework, the trail consists of a piled rubble base with extensive retaining walls. The trail contains one of the largest capped culverts in the system, large enough to stand in. The trail ascends the bluffs above Route 3 and includes a dilapidated wooden railing. On the bluffs, the route is dangerously and directly above Route 3, as the road was widened in 1954 after the trail was built. Miss Bell Gurnee oversaw the work and requested that NPS crews not cut trailside vegetation too widely. The north end of the route disappears into the road for the same reason. Exceptional stonework and wonderful views of Frenchman's Bay. MB
