Goat Trail, Pemetic Mountain Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME
Easy to follow, unmarked summit trail with outstanding views of Jordan Pond and the Bubbles begins about halfway along east side of Jordan Pond Trail (almost at beginning of unmarked Carry Trail). Abandoned in 1976 and was one of the first mountain trails constructed (DG). Small wood remnant of original trailhead sign at Jordan Pond marks start of large stone steps (good condition) that begin immediately and climb steeply to Park Loop Road. Granite boulder face on Pemetic across from top steps of lower Goat Trail shows leftovers of old iron rungs. Some handles remain, but main rungs have been cut. Trail is steep and cuts through sometimes jutting piles of boulder fields and a combination of trees and rock. First steep section has most of the roughly constructed step work (not as highly constructed as lower section near Jordan Pond) with numerous Bates-style cairns (many original - the typical window view through Bates style cairns here appear to "see" through to the next cairn if one is ascending). Trail cuts up and over steep rock formations and then hits wooded area before meeting main open ledges under Pemetic summit. More cairns (more contemporary and probably not on original path) zigzag along wide ledges and lead to just south of summit – exact path is somewhat unclear – surfeit of cairns make a web of paths in this area on west side of summit. Crossing of park motor road is very dangerous. SB, DG, MB
