Drawings of Scripture Animals

From collection Jonathan Fisher House Collection

Drawings of Scripture Animals

These seem to be the original pen and ink drawings of the various animals from which woodcuts for illustrating "Scripture Animals" were to be produced. Many are in reverse of the desired final image, or just as the face of the block would appear when completed. Many sheets have two or more animals. Sheets vary in size from 3 5/8 x 4 3/8 inches. to 6 x 7 inches. There is one of a horse that is half size - probably cut in two. There is a brown handmade paper envelope, about 5 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Hand-sewn at ends, and labeled by Reverend Jonathan Fisher: "Figures in Natural History etc." one one side. "Profiles, drawings of Scripture Animals, etc." on the other side. There are 58 sheets in this collection. (There are other drawings that may have once been with this collection.) 21 sheets are currently matted, and are on shelf 14 in the Archives & Library. The drawing of a bittern is on display in the exhibit room 2017-2021.
