On the back is the inscription: "The Ruffed Heath Cock or Grous of Pennsylvania, where it is called a pheasant, is here drawn by a scale of six inches for a foot. Copied from Geo. Edwards and painted by Jonathan Fisher. First copy - June 25, 1795. This, April 1803." Fisher's journals confirm that he was working on this painting on April 19 and 20, 1803.
