Dear Dr. Dahlgren:
The Wild Gardens of Acadia was formed, among
other purposes, for the promotion of biological research upon
Mount Desert Island. Those interested in it feel that that
object will be best advanced by doing all in its power to assure
the success of the enterprise started on its land at Salisbury
Cove three years ago by the Harpswell Laboratory under your
direction; and that this end will be best served by granting,
in free gift, the land it has occupied to your Association, the
Harpswell Laboratory, for the continuance of its work and for
its assurance of permanence in occupation of the site.
The conditions made are: that prior to the con-
veyance the Harpswell Laboratory shall identify itself with
this Island by change of title to The Mount Desert Island
Biological Laboratory; that The Wild Gardens of Acadia shall
be given the right, by a clause in the deed of gift, to place
and maintain by the public roadside, near the entrance to the
shore, a bronze tablet, secured upon a granite rock or boulder,
rehearsing the history of the acquisition of the land and its
gift to the Laboratory, and rehearsing also the memorial nature
of the gift in association with the late Dr. S. Weir Mitchell
of Philadelphia, whose name it shall bear as a station of the

Dear Mr. Dahlgrou:
I beg to acknowledge receipt of
yours of the 14th.
The Edward's property is in
the name of the wild Gardons. A check, as you say,
could be sent to me and I will see that it reaches
the proper parties.
It will, of course, bo necessary
to have a meeting of the wild Gardons before a con-
veyance can be made as they must authorize the of-
ficers to execute the deeds at which time they
must decide as to the form of the deed.
