The Director,
National Park Service,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Sir:
I understand that the Secretary of the Interior has zya
proved in 60 far as it traverses park land, subject to the definite
offer of the necessary funds, the reconstruction and re-alignment
where desirable (for use for horses, horse drawn vehicles and pedes-
trians but not for motors) of the old Martin Roberts road on the
east side of Eagle Lake in Lafayette National Park.
The road as
surveyed passes through park lands for 4400 feet of its total length
of 11,000 feet.
I hereby offer to provide whatever funds may be neces-
sary for the construction of this road according to the same apeci-
fications approved for other horse roads already constructed in the
Lafsyette National Park, with the understanding that this offer will
not be binding upon me unless a similar offer is accepted by the
other interests through whose land the road passes.
A blue print
showing the line of the procesed road, which extanda from the point
A to the point B, connecting with existing horse roads at both points,
is enclosed herewith.
Very sincerely,
John D. Rockefeller, JI.

Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jrag
Seal Earbor, Maine.
Dear Mr. Rockefeller:
I am enclosing herewith a letter written by Mr.
Lynam, President of the Water Company, enclosing an
unsigned copy of the minutes of the meeting with reference
to the road on the Eastern side of Eagle Lake.
You will notice that the President is given the
authority to consent to any modification in the route.
Yours very truly,

Dear Harry:
Enclosed is copy of the minutes of the meeting
of the Directors of the Water Company, held July 17th,
1928.
At that meeting I called attention to the fact
that Mr. Rockefeller has been of great assistance to us in
protecting the watershed of Eagle Lake from contamnation,
mentioning the purchase of the Rich and Preble properties,
the turning of the brook at the foot of the Lake, which
drained two swamps and on which were habitations 80 this
brook now flows away from the Lake instead of into it a d
also the purchase of the Liscomb property which we have no
doubt Mr. Rockefeller will use so it will not longer be a
menace to the purity of the water in Eagle Lak e.
As to the suggestion in the vote that any near er
approach to the Lake of the proposed road must be with the
consent of the Water Company, you may be assured I shall be
very reasonable in granting the requests.
Very truly yours,
