Temple University Libraries mourns the loss of
Thomas Whitehead, who worked for 45 years to
grow the extraordinary archives and special collec-
tions held by the Libraries today.
Tom's long and distinguished career in special col-
lections librarianship began at Syracuse University,
where he served in the Rare Book Department, first
as cataloger and then as bibliographer. A native of
Jamestown, New York, Tom received his BA from
Bucknell University with a major in history and a
minor in mathematics. He received his MLS from
Syracuse University, where he also spent time as a lecturer in the School of Library Science, teaching a grad-
uate course entitled "The Library and the Adult Reader."
On August 14, 1967, little more than a year after Paley Library opened, Tom came to Temple as Rare Book Li-
brarian. Through the years, Tom's titles changed but his passion for rare books and manuscripts remained
constant. Over the course of five decades, he acquired amazing additions to special collections, ranging from
a stunning William Morris Kelmscott Chaucer, to illuminated manuscripts, to a wonderful Holinshed's Chron-
icle. One of his final endeavors was completion of an extraordinary lithographic manual collection, including
an 1818 edition of Aloys Senefelder's classic work on lithography, considered one of the most important
books published in the nineteenth century.
Tom brought many wonderful manuscript collec-
tions to Temple ranging from the literary papers of
poet Lyn Lifshin, to the records of the Philadelphia
Gay and Lesbian Task Force, to the papers of Fa-
ther Paul Washington and the papers of Franklin
Littell, a father of American Holocaust Studies.
Other significant collections expanded by Tom in-
clude the Contemporary Culture Collection; the
Science Fiction and Fantasy Collection; printing,
publishing, and bookselling collections; and the
list goes on and on. One of Tom's lasting legacies is
our Philadelphia Evening Bulletin Collection. Tem-

and house the archives here.
Starting in 1968, Tom was active in the Philobiblon
Club of Philadelphia, serving as its secretary and on its board. As collector with wide reaching interests and a
printer, "Amber Beetle Press," he had a natural affinity with the Philobiblon members who are collectors,
dealers, and curators.
Tom also served as Temple's representative to the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Li-
braries (PACSCL) from the organization's inception in 1985 until 2006. He retired as Senior Curator for Rare
Books and Literary Manuscripts in January 2013. His retirement occasioned donations to the collections in
his honor, and SCRC again plans to acquire an appropriate item dedicated to his memory.
Tom made an indelible impact on our special collections and the scholars and researchers who use them-a
legacy that will continue to benefit future generations.

I'm glad the copies are proving useful.
No, regretfully the relevant manual shelflists and identifications to the manuscripts were
boxed in a forced move a number of years ago and have still not been located. This is the
same information I need to find out the original holdings of this group and how the
manuscript recon-cataloger may have messed it up. When found I will let you know what I
am able to identify.

Dorr holdings: Addendum
Dear Mr. Whitehead,
The copies and invoice arrived yesterday. While I have not yet carefully reviewed the
files, the content looks more promising than I expected. It contains unique items whoich
have relational implications that were not uncovered in my research thus far, especially
regarding Mrs. Charles Hazen Dorr who dined with Charles Dickens during his 1867 American
tour but is otherwise a largely shadowy figure in American letters.
Do you have any information on the provenance of this collection? I'd be very
appreciative of any additional information on how this collection came into your
possession.

RE: Holdings Inquiry - Dorr -2
Dear Mr. Whitehead,
Thank you for finding and describing the contents of the ten archival folders of George
Bucknam Dorr family correspondence.
Your offer to have the relevant materials photocopied is very much appreciated. Would you
have items 2,3,5,7, and 8 copied and invoiced to me at my office address? I will then
promptly send you a check. If the copies require closer examination I then can make
arrangements to visit Temple at an appropriate time.
It is unclear to me why items 1, 4, & 6 are included in these family papers. If you
believe that there is any biographical detail that may interest me, please have these
photocopied as well.
I want to emphasize how much promise I attach to these materials. My research has been
very productive for the last half of Mr. Dorr's life but archival resources documenting
his first four decades are spotty at best. Thank you very much.
Are there any special citation/acknowledgement policies that I should be aware of that are
not already indicated on your web pages?
With best wishes,

Re: Holdings Inquiry - Dorr - 1
Right into one of our areas of confusion!
During a recon ten years ago from the manual catalog to the on-line catalogue the grant
cataloger entered the Dorr group of folders but along the way managed to some of the
folders to other catch-all manuscript groups. Five or so years ago rooms were switched in
the main library and everything in those rooms were boxed for 6 month storage, including
the manual manuscript collection shelf-list -- the shelf-list is still in one of the
cartons unpacked.
What I now have in hand from two areas of the manuscript collection are letters from:
James Lane Allen, Phillips Brooks, Margaret Deland, Edward Everett, William Everett,
Merrill E. Gates, Edward Everett Hale, and Henry Van Dyke. One or two folders or names
elude me and would depend on my finding the old manuscript self-list. In my next e-mail I
shall gove you some description of what is found in the folders.
Not possible to view the materials on weekends. Copying is possible for research use ($.
exposure, postage) : . But see my e-mail on contents following.

cannot absolutely confirm original makeup of this group or

Dear Tom,
Ron Archives (19)
In early 2004 we exchanged correspondence regarding the two dozen letters sent

by members of the Massachusetts Dorr family. Since I retired last year from library
administration I am trying to complete the biography of the founder of Acadia
My Photos
National Park and am revisiting my manuscript copies.

When I asked you for provenance information on MSS 014, you stated that
"regretfully the relevant manual shelflists and identifications to the manuscripts were
boxed in a forced move a number of years ago and have still not been located." Is
this still the case?
With appreciation for your assistance.
Most Sincerely,

Subject: Holdings Inquiry
Dear Mr. Whitehead:
According to your catalog you are in possession of 10 archival folders of George Bucknam Dorr family
correspondence , 1861-1929.
I am most excited by this information since I have been researching archival resources for a biography on Mr.
Dorr having relied thus far on extensive documentation in NARA, the Rockefeller Archive Center, and the
National Park Service Archives.
Is there a finding aid that further details the content of these folders? I am prepared to pay the necessary fees
to have all this material copied and mailed to me. My sue of this doicumentation would be appropriately
credited in the publication I am preparing and any requests for institutional permission would certainly be
secured in advance.
If an on site visit is necessary or desirable that may be possible in the weeks ahead since I will be visiting
my family in Allentown. Is weekend access possible?
Looking forward to hearing from you are your earliest convenience.
I very much appreciate this professional courtesy. With best wishes for the New Year.

Dear Mr. Dorr:-
A propos of our pleasant conversation
at Stimson's dinner on Tuesday night, I have been
looking up our old friend Virgil in the Divine
Comedy. It is very encouraging to find that he
not only leads Dante through the Infernc, but also
serves as his guide in the Purgaterio. This
would seem to indicate that Dante had hopes of
Virgil, which I share. He certainly was not a
"lifer" in the Inferno penitentiary, and if he
could get to Purgatory he might very well go further,
at least on parole.
Very truly yours,
