maintenance of the Mall in Brunwick, Maine was the
responsibility of a VIA , who still care for it today. When public
money was lacking, VIAs funded their beautification efforts
with private money, and often hired professional designers. In
some cases, the simple character of a town common or green
was changed with the addition of ornamental plantings,
pedestrian circulation systems, and structures such as
bandstands, fountains and monuments.
