Pauleena MacDougall, Ph.D.; Associate Director
Pauleena MacDougall, associate director of the Maine Folklife Center, receiv
her Ph.D. in American history from the University of Maine in 1995. She has
worked for MFC since 1989. She is also faculty associate in Anthropology,
where she teaches courses in linguistics and Native American history, and in
t
Department of History, where she teaches public history and U.S. history. Sir
1979, MacDougall has published numerous papers on Penobscot Indian language, culture
history. She is editor of Northeast Folklore and author of The Penobscot Dance of
Resistance: Tradition in the History of a People, to be published by the University of New
England Press, 2004. She is currently writing a biography of Fannie Hardy Eckstorm.
Pamela Dean, Ph.D.; Archivist
Pamela Dean joined the staff of the Maine Folklife Center as archivist of the
Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History in 2000. A native of Bar
Harbor, she received her BA and MA in history form the University of Maine
and her PhD in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
From 1991 to 1999 Dean was the director of the Williams Center for Oral
History at Louisiana State University. She is a long-time member of the Oral
History Association and her interests include women's history and radio documentaries tha
use oral history materials.
Bethany Haverlock, Administrative Assistant
Bethany has been with the Maine Folklife Center since 1996. Among her mar.
duties, she fills the book, cassette, and video orders, sends out the traveling
exhibits, keeps track of our members, and generally keeps the Center hummir
along smoothly.

Edward "Sandy" Ives, Ph.D.; Founder and Former Director

Sandy received his Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana Universi
1962. He has taught at the University of Maine since 1955,
first as Instructor in English and beginning in 1964 as Profe
of Folklore in the Department of Anthropology. He is curre
retired from both teaching and directing the Maine Folklife
Center.
He has received numerous honors and awards including an
honorary LL.D. from the University of Prince Edward Islan
1986, the Annual Harvey A. Kantor Memorial Award for
Outstanding Achievement in Oral History in 1979, and the
Marius Barbeau Medal from the Canadian Folklore Studies
Association for outstanding lifetime contributions to the fiel
of folklore in 1991.
Ives organized the Folklife Center in 1992, combining the Northeast Folklore Society and
Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History, which he founded in 1957. He has edited
monograph series Northeast Folklore since 1958. His other publications include,

Description: This collection consists of a series of interviews done by Pamela Dean,
1980-1984, as research for her was master's thesis in history at the University of
Maine, 1984, entitled "Us and Them: An Oral History of Life on the Summer Estates
in Coastal Hancock County, Maine." The period covered by the interviews is
approximately 1880-1980. The major focus is on the relations between the summer
people who owned estates in Northeast Harbor and Blue Hill, Maine, and the native
Mainers who worked for them on the estates. Dean's grandparents and aunts and
uncles had worked for summer people in various capacities and her interest in the topic
began with interviews with her aunt, Ethel Anthony, conducted for Edward D.
"Sandy" Ives's fieldwork course in the fall of 1980. See also Collection 043: Northeast
Harbor Library, which includes several interviews with summer people copied from the
holdings of the Northeast Harbor Library. The collection also includes numerous
