Question
Your Conservation Collection contains the Wilderness Society Papers,
including National Parks Association documents by its Exec. Secy' Robert
Sterling Yard. I understand that these documents are being processed but I
hoped that you might be able to confirm whether Yard's 1932 "Notes on the
Primitive in National Parks" was in this collection as I've been led to believe
from Paul S. Sutters "Driven Wild," U Washington Press, 2002. R. Epp,
Director of the Southern New Hampshire University Library. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Tipton,
Thank you very much for responding with such promising information. I'll forward this
message to the Denver Public Library and see what they have been able to uncover. I assume
from your message that no documents relating to Mr. Yard are being held by you for
shippoing at some future date--namely, that everything is now at the DPL.

Dr. Epp-- I asked a colleague of mine at NPCA who was involved in transferring some of the
information to the Library during the past two years, and she said there were substantial
documents from and about Robert S. Yard in the materials we shipped.
you will have to check with the library as to their whereabouts; I presume these documents
have been catalogued.

Robert Russell at the Denver Public Library informs me that the NPCA has begun shipping
its organizational archives to his institution.
I am writing to determine whether that process has included documents relating to Robert
Sterling Yard and his association with the NPCA during the 1920's and 1930's.
I am writing a biography of his friend and colleague, George Bucknam Dorr (1853-1944), the
founder of Acadia National Park. In discussing their relationship it would be very helpful
to know whether the aforementioned organizational documents do or do not contain any
correspondence between Yard and Dorr or about Mr. Dorr in Yard's discussions with NPS
Director Horace Albright.
I very much appreciate your attention to this matter.

RE: R.S. Yard request
Dear Robert,
Regarding our earlier communications concerning the National Parks Conservation
Association papers and my interest in the Robert S. Yard documents, I'm sending this
follow-up inquiry.
You may recall (see below) that my interest in Mr. Yard centers around his publications,
visits, and engagements with the the founder of Acadia National Park, Mr. George Bucknam
Dorr (1853-1944) and their mutual friend, NPS Director Horace Albright. Since I have
neared completion of the research phase for my biography of Mr. Dorr, information about
the completion of a finding aid might help me avoid a misstep when writing about the Dorr-
Yard relationship.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Mr. Epp,
I would agree with your statement that waiting a few months may be a good idea. This
collection is arriving slowly in sporadic shipments.
We really have no way of knowing when more material from the time frame requested may
arrive. Six months may provide a better idea of what material is available on Mr. Yard.
The NPCA has a staff member going through the material and preparing it for shipping. I
do not know if it would be worth your effort to contact them directly. I do not know what
their previous arrangements were for access to their organizational papers.
Thanks for your patience on this matter. We are not nearly finished with receiving the
NPCA papers, and it will be a fairly lengthy process.
Good luck with your continuing research.
Sincerely,
Robert Russell

RE: R.S. Yard request
Dear Mr. Russell,
I received last month the NPCA inventory and have taken time to review with an eye to my
research needs. Thank you for sharing this with me.
It is clear that of the first 100 boxes only Box 89 contains material dating from Yard's
time with the NPCA. It may be that some of this material (c. 1921-30) is germane to my
interests. However, since you report that "we are still taking in sizable portions of the
collection" it may be most sensible for me to contact you in three or six months and see
what progress has been accomplished toward accessioning these papers. Do you agree with
this timeframe? Do you see any merit in me contacting the NPCA directly?
Thank you.

Mr. Epp,
I am writing in reply to your question about papers pertaining to R.S. Yard.
The National Parks Conservation Association papers have begun to arrive over the last year
roughly. The collection has not been processed, and no finding aid has yet been created.
There may well be material dating from Yard's time with the NPCA, but it is in its rough
state at this point. I can provide our inventory, which is a first pass for accession
purposes. This may at least give you an idea of what type of material we have received
thus far. This may change quickly since we are still taking in sizable portions of the
collection. Any material you wish to look at will be subject to a review ahead of time
(since it is unprocessed), and access to sensitive material may be denied.
Patience my be required in order to locate the material you are looking for. It simply
depends on when the NPCA sends us that type of material.
If you have further questions, feel free to let me know.
Sincerely,
Robert Russell
