Mr. George B. Dorr,
Boston, Mass.
Dear Mr. Dorr,
You will be surprised to receive this letter at such a late
date.
I have begun three letters to you, but they were never fin-
ished- due to negligence or interruption.
My father wrote that he had had a short visit with you. I am
glad that you have met, but sorry that you could not be together lon-
gar. Did you find time to talk with him about his experiences in the
Test during pioneer days? He siad also that he had called upon Prof.
Davis. By-the-way, I received a short: letter from the Prof. the other
day. He said that no was to give a lecture in Boston on the results
of our Arizona excursion, and that the lecture was to be illustrated
with lantern views of the country. He said that you would perhaes be
there. It must have been interesting to listen to his lecture and see
the views reproduced in that fashion.
The great gorge with its beautiful shadows and stupendous col-
unns appears often before me and it is always pleasant to recall such
scenes as the sun-set we witnessed while riding together into Kanab
after the Buskskin trip. The scenes I remember oftenest are the first
views of the canyon from the Greenland points: The many colored strata
and the blue evening shadows filling slowly that immense abyss below,
and deepening gradually into dark purple. Also the marvelous display
of colors in the east during sun-set and sun-rise. How do these seenes
compare with those of the Ganadian Rockies? I suppose the Canadian
spenery is not so savage or brilliant as that of the Canyon.
Mr. Dorr, our experience together this summer has been a great
2
help to me in my work. I am more earnest in my efforts and have high-
er ideals in life; for which I am indebted to you, and for which I am
very grateful. Since you were here I have succeeded in attending xxxxx
school by teaching physical culture as a means of paying for the school
ing. I have been kept busy nearly all the time. Besides the regular
course of study I write up the academy colum in the Deseret News, and
take charge of the local department of the college paper. I find, how-
ever that to be thus extremely active is to be more contented and hap-
pier. This sementer of school has been better for me than has any pre-
ceeding one. I have studied harder and accomplished more in less time.
But I have also, at times, felt more discouraged and in turn more hope-
ful than ever before. The whole school term has been one of - ups
"
and If downs.
You of course would like to hear about Roy. He is here in Provo
keeping books for a large firm. He is not yet married. Roy is
a
strange person
For two years we had been close friends, but for some
inconceivable reason he is now anything but sociable. Something must
have happened on the trip this summer but I cannot ferrit out what it
was. I wish I could, and could straightenimat ters
because I like
him.
Tell, Mr. Dorr, if you have any time to write to me I shall be
glad to hear from you. Frite me a long letter telling me all about
your Canadian trip, etc. I lost your address and did not regain it
till a few weeks ago when I chanced to ask Roy if he knew it.
Hopping to receive a letter from you, I remain,
Very gratefully yours,
Engene Li Roberts
Roy Woodley was the son of President Woolley of the Kanab State
nd acted as driver of the supply wagon and cook upon my trip.

There is considerable information about Roberts in our files. We have
numerous newspaper articles (including obituaries), a lengthy graduate

paper, and a thesis from the University of Utah (1952) on him. Perhaps
the most useful, however, is an eleven-page biography, a copy of which I

Dear Mr. Daines:
I am the recently retired University Librarian at Southern New
Hampshire University and would appreciate your assistance with a line
of research.
BYU coach Eugene L. Roberts wrote a letter January 2, 1903 to George
Bucknam Dorr (1853-1944) expressing his appreciation for Dorr's wise
counsel when they traveled together as members of a geological
expedition to the Southwest led by Dorr's Harvard colleague, William
Davis. In this two page typescript letter, Roberts describes in some detail
"our Arizona excursion," asks for information on Dorr's Canadian trip,
and claims that he is "indebted" to Dorr--for becoming "more earnest in
my efforts and have higher ideals in life." He discusses as well his
studies and teaching of physical culture.
George Bucknam Dorr at this time was beginning to assemble properties
on Mount Desert Island in Maine. Within the next decade his
conservation leadership would result in the establishment of the Sieur de
Monts National Monument which would later become Acadia National
Park where he was its first Superintendent.
I would appreciate your assistance in identifying biographical
information on Eugene L. Roberts, including details about his career at
BYU--frankly, any data that would better enable me to understand their
relationship. Would you have any information in hand regarding his
parents and/or children. I ask because Roberts mentions that "my father
wrote that he had a short visit with you[Dorr]."
I recently found the Roberts letter in the unprocessed historical
administrative manuscripts at the Sawtelle Research Center at Acadia
National Park--I can send you a copy if you wish. I know of no response
from Mr. Dorr
With best wishes for the New Year,

[Extract from "An Autobiography by Eugene L. Roberts]
425
I take an extended trip with Harvard University
explorers. Two years after the Academy expedition,
I had the good fortune to be invited to join a party
of Harvard University students of geology for a
seven-week trip to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado
River in Northern Arizona. These students were led
by Dr. William Morris Davis, a world authority on
Geology. Accompanying the scientists merely as
observers and students of "scenery" were Guss Cobb
and George B. Dorr of Boston. I was the guest of
Mr. Dorr, a world traveler. My expenses were all paid.
My good fortune was the unexpected outcome from
a few conversations Mr. Dorr and I had with each
other at the Roberts Hotel while the Bostonian waited
for Dr. Davis to complete a series of lectures he
was giving at the Brigham Young University Summer
School. To me, the seven-week trip was a short course
in nature appreciation, scenic grandeur, geological
wonders, desert biology, and incidentally, New England
culture. Much of the time, I rode with Mr. Dorr
while the geology students and Dr. Davis studied
geological phenomena - especially the Hurricane Fault.
Mr. Dorr called my attention to the beauty of
the desert landscape, the purple hazes, the brilliant
sunsets, the savage grandeur of barren mountains
sculptured into grotesque shapes. He led me to
observe the fierce struggle going on between desert
plants and desert animals fighting for life sustaining
moisture. He told me the story of evolution - not a
good story for a Mormon to hear. Imagine the reaction
of my Mormon parents when I relayed the great drama
to them.
I shall always be grateful to the Bostonian
Bachelor, George B. Dorr, for guiding me into a new
world. I have tried to repay him as will be shown
later in story.
my [Not found]
I re-enter Brigham Young Academy. After returning
from the Central and South American Exploring Expedi-
tion, I enrolled once more at the Academy. The
Mormon Church had abandoned football and had refused
to allow its educational institutions to include the
sport in their athletic programs. This was done in
the Fall of 1900. I took the initiative in organizing
an "out-law" eleven which we called the "Provo Team"
even though the players were nearly all Academy students,
and the uniforms belonged to the school.

[Eugene L. Roberts, Alma Richards and Clinton Larson, ca. 1910]
Description
During the second decade of the twentieth century, BYU produced under the coaching of Eugene L. Roberts (center) two high jumpers of world fame, Alma Richards, left,
gold medal winner in the 1912 in
Parowan, Utah, cleared the bar at 6 ft. 4 in. at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and received the gold medal from King Gustavus V. The versatile athlete then won the shot put
at the French Games at Rheims, the high jump and shot put in the French Sports Clubs Games at Paris, the Penn Relays high jump (1913), the high jump and broad jump at
the International Collegiate games in Chicago (1913), the decathlon at the National AAU Championships at Chicago (1913), and scores of other honors. He was commissioned
a lieutenant in World War I, and in the American Expeditioanry Forces Championships in Paris in 1919, he won the high jump and the standing broad jump; he won second
in
the triple jump and third in the broad jump. He studied at Cornell at at the University of Southern California and was admitted to the bar, but he taught high school
for
thirty-one years. He was elected to the Helms Hall of Fame and was named Utah athlete of the century, 1850-1950. He died in 1963 at Long Beach. Larson, born in 1892 in St.
George, Utah, won the Utah Collegiate State Meet and the Far West Meet in San Diego in 1916; and in 1917 he jumped 6 ft. 6 in. at BYU, unofficially. He broke the world
collegiate record at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia at 6 ft 5 3/8 in. The victory called for a parade in Provo, a celebration, and a dinner sponsored by the Commercial Club
at
the Roberts Hotel. In 1918, Larson won the high jump in the U.S. Championships in Madison Square Garden, New York. He won the bigh jump, the running broad jump,
the
low hurdles, the high hurdles, and the pole vault and placed second in the 100-yard dash in Texas. That year he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and was commissioned first
lieutenant and made the athletic instructor of Squadron 39. In 1919, he took first place in the high jump (6 ft. 4 in.) in the Inter-Allied Games in Pershing Stadium, Paris, the
same year Richards was winning medals in the U.S. Expeditionary Force Championships. Also at BYU that year he won first place in eight events at a collegiate meet. In 1920
Larson jumped 6 ft. 8 in., setting a new world record, which he broke in 1924 with a leap of 6 ft. 1/2 in. (The world record in 1974 was 7 ft. 6 1/4 in.) Larson taught high
school for many years and was a prominent AAU and Olympic official. He died in Salt Lake City in 1952 and was named to the Utah Hall of Fame on November 20, 1974.
