Dear Dr. Epp
Your question concerning the no.2 Commonwealth Avenue Land Trust of 1896 was forwarded to
the Kirstein Business Branch Library from ask@bpl.org. Unfortunately, there are no records of
the particular trust at the Kirstein Branch. I am sending by regular mail some photocopies which
may help you in your research.
Prior to the institution of the Antitrust Laws in the early 20th century, trusts were commonplace
and were used generally to operate in restraint of trade. The trust charter may give an official
purpose, but the true purpose may be difficult to determine.
The Directory of Directors in the City of Boston is a set of annual volumes showing the affiliations
between companies and directors. The first edition from 1905 is not early enough to show your
particular trust, but does list several for Peabody and Parkman. The purpose of the trusts is not
stated.
Another set of volumes, the Fisher Manuals, first published in 1925, detail when companies and
trusts were dissolved. Again, your particular trust is not mentioned. A similar trust is listed in the
1938 volume. The Commonwealth Avenue Land Trust of 1903 was filed with the Department of
Corporation and Taxation, State House, Boston, MA on July 10, 1922. It would appear that the
records for trusts from that period should have been filed with that office.
The Secretary of the Commonwealth Corporations Division is today located at One Ashburton
Place, 17th floor, Boston. Their telephone number is 617-727-9640. Contact their office to see
whether they have kept the records from 1896, and if so, where they might be kept. Their office
typically will not perform the search for you, so you may have to make a visit in person.
Good luck with your research
