Hi Marie,
First off, you ask about setting aside funds for
Dorr's funeral expenses. With cremation the expense was slight; the main cost being the
transport of his body to Cambridge, MA. I have reviewed my Mt. Auburn Cemetery Archives file and it shows that
the date of incineration was August 8, 1944, ordered by Ben Hadley and that the remains were removed the next
day to John A. Peters. I have a letter dated Jan. 3, 1939 from the Mt. Auburn Cemetery to GBD regarding George's
request for cremation information, the fee being $40. A followup letter ten days later details
plans for shipment of the body via the Boston & Maine RR. Then there would be a cost for the hearse to
deliver
the body; and following the cremation the hearse could "take the urn back with them when returning to Maine."
No record of prepayment is extant. Expenditures were tightly controlled by Judge Peters.
Regarding the script you sent me, you will see that I made substantial additions to beef up its narrative content.
I don't know what word number limits you operate within for each station so some cuts might be necessary.
Certain broad themes were omitted that I added; others might be added in subsequent drafts. I also deleted
the incident with his coronary attack since it appeared incidental; moreover, it is an uncorroborated report.
Without a location finder I had difficulty matching content against the orientation of the visitor; can one
be developed?
All in all, I think that this is a most worthwhile project and I am delighted that you included me in the process.
I think it requires several more drafts before it has the necessary polish and balance you are looking for. I have some ideas for a couple more themes that could be succinctly introduced at
various stations, if you are interested. Do
you have a timeline for completion of this?
Attached find my version.
All the Best,
Ronald

To Ronald Epp
Ron, thanks for the kind words--it means a lot coming from you! It was really fun to be able to have the time to
write this article. I love research and writing and sadly, do not get enough time to do so. I hope to write more
articles for sure--just a matter of having the time while also making sure to keep up with my other duties. I'm only
part-time so it's tough! And, yes--I would love to collaborate!
O'Neill:
Ah, wonderful. I knew there was a Rockefeller connection due to marriage--the power of google--but that is even
better to read. And, this other stuff is amazing. I'm not surprised at all re: #6--I would characterize the letters from
G. O'Neill in the park record as incessant groveling and social climbing at best, trying to get anything and
everything from GBD's estate that they could. Hadley was not fooled though, thankfully!
I also google-mapped G. O'Neil's 10 Exchange PI. address today for fun you should see.
Here is his obit: notice the name of one of his children? Desperate to keep the (loose) connection to "Cousin
George"?

Amazing how family wealth builds and privileges those that come after!
Please send a hard copy when you have a chance and Merry Christmas! Marie

Marie,
It occurred to me that I had a file on Abby and George O'Neill with some items that may
not be in your files:
1. Trustees of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, they may have had clout with the
Rockefeller family.
2. Abby Rockefeller Mauze (1903-1976) was the first child born to JDRJr. and Abby. Their
daughter married three times, once to David Milton with whom she had two children, one
who became Mrs. George Dorr O'Neill. (See her entry in the Rockefeller Family
Archives).
3. In 2004 I tracked down George O'Neill in Oyster Bay where he had been a candidate
for mayor. I left a message for him, repeated calls followed from me, no response from
him; similarly, a letter followed, no response.
4. In a letter to Robin Karson dates 12/2/2009 (she is the Director of the Library of
American Landscape History), I stated that the O'Neill's visited Oldfarm two years after
Dorr's death, and their son attended the Dorr Memorial unveiling.
5. I take it that you have a copy the letter of 5/18/48 to Hadley from the Acting NPS Asst.
6. Most importantly, I found in the John A. Peters archive (still secure in Ellsworth at Hale
and Hamlin) a 10/21/1936 letter the father of Grover and Catherine O'Neill. It is on 10
Exchange Place, NY stationary, and begins innocuously "Dear Cousin George" about
Dorr's plans for an horticultural exhibit but soon begins to give--over three pages--near
directives as to how he should act in setting up a trusteeship (as though he lacked
experience with such matters). He suggested establishing a scholarship at Harvard,
warned him about the dangers of individual bequests, Then a series of specific questions
about Compass Harbor, the nursery, his library, family letters, silverware, furnishings,
china, etc. You get the drift. I can send you a snail mail copy if you are interested. The
signature is largely indecipherable.
