Re: Mr. Dorr & Old Farm
I think I can help with this. I have some material on the builder and the
construction, and the information on the disposition of Old Farm.
As for images, I have a few that I will make available. The good news is
that park Chief of Maintenance Jim Vekasi has a copy of the same
disposition file with lots of excellent interior and exterior images. I am
sure he will make those available, but he won't likely want Brooke
involved.
My Acadia histories are the histories of the park roads, the park carriage
roads, and the park bridges. There are several boxes in the park archives.
This may be listed as the Acadia Roads and Bridges Recording Project by the
Historic American Engineering Record.
Send me a proposed rough outline of your proposed article, and I will reply
with what parts I think I can flesh out. It will be a pleasure.
I have not forgotten that CD; house is still incomplete, but soon.
Best,
Richard

Marla,
I am delighted that you are interested in talking about a piece on Old Farm for the Fall Journal.
Before I commit I need a week or so to take stock of my resources to determine whtehr I can meet that
deadline.
This summer I am championing here a major renovation and expansion of our library. I've spoken to
NPS Historian Richard Quin once again about the Old Farm resources that he has gathered in his work
on an administrative history of ANP and even proposed to him that we might collaborate on this piece.
We should sort out some of these matters in the next two weeks or so. I also need to approach Jim
Vekasi regarding his files of interior and exterior images of Mr. Dorr's home.
Is this agreeable with you?
Have a fine holiday weekend.

Ron, my sincere apologies. I did receive your email, but have been in and out (mostly out) of the
office for the past several weeks, and have been a very tardy correspondent.

I would like to talk with you about an article for the Journal. I think something about Old Farm would
be a nice fit for our fall journal, if a mid-September deadline is not too early.
Again, I'm sorry not to reply sooner. Please let me know if this fall will work, and if not we can talk
about another issue.
Thanks, Ron. I'm glad you had a productive, enjoyable visit to MDI.
Best,
Marla

Marla,
In late April I emailed you regarding any interest that you might have in two topics for future
issues of the Journal. I provided a brief abstract for an article on the ANP Old Farm homesite
of G.B. Dorr and another on the beginnings of the MDI village improvement societies with
special attention to the development of long neglected footpaths that are now being re-
established.
I fear that you may not have recieved my original query. However, even if you have and there
is no interest at this time in such topics, please let me know one way or the other.
Hope you are faring well and ready for a busy Bar Harbor summer. My research on Mr. Dorr is
progressing now at a more rapid clip and as always it was delightful to visit MDI earlier this
month. Doug Macbeth was enormously helpful in directing me to the few existing documents
in his facility on the Dorr donation of the Jackson Laboratory property.

Re: George Dorr/Old Farm images
I am referring this inquiry to our museum curator, Brooke Childrey. She has
custody of the park archives including our photographs.
That said, I do have at least one good photo of Old Farm in the park
building files.

Dear Jim,
Nearly two years ago we met at the Historic Trails Conference that Margie
Coffin and Marla Major coordinated.
At that time I was at the early stages of research the primary resources on
George Dorr as part of a long-range plan to have published a biography of
Acadia's Founder, one that is a significant departure from the
popularizations since this work will be based on manuscripts and
administrative documents. After exhausting the ANP Archives I've moved on
to the NPS resources at the National Archives and extensive primary
documents at the Rockefeller Archive Center.
I'm writing at the suggestion of NPS historian Richard Quin who believes
that you may have--and have access to--photographic images of the
administrative period of Mr. Dorr (1916-44). I've proposed to Marla Major a
brief article on Old Farm for the Winter 2002-2003 Friends of Acadia
8/26/2002
Journal and would like to see what resources are available that do not
duplicate what I've seen at the Bar Harbor Historical Society and the Jesup
Library.
I hope to visit MDI again in early November. Perhaps I could meet with you
at that time.
With best wishes,

Dear Jim,
Several months ago I contacted you regarding the biography that I am writing on the life and times of Mr.
Dorr.
Following a recent visit to to Strom Beach Cottage with Brooke, I'm now writing to inquire whether you may
have any historic documentation regarding in your files regarding the following: Storm Beach Cottage and Old
Farm property floor maps, building renovation details ( from construction to 1960), and any information on
Old Farm property disposition that took place in the early 1950's when the mansion was razed.
Brooke assures me that I've seen everything in her possession but suggested that you might have some
documents or images that are not duplicated at the Sawtelle Archives. Whether the information is
documented or anecdotal in character, I'd be very interested in your impressions or insights into Old Farm or
any facet of the Park developed during Mr. Dorr's administration. While I have a rather full account for my
biography from the archival repositories that I have used, I didn't want to leave any stone unturned--and
there are many unanswered questions as you might suspect.
If you think it would be useful for us to talk about this let me take you to lunch when I next visit the Island in
late February or early March.
Happy New Year!

Dear Jim,
Following up on our earlier communication, I will be visiting ANP HQ on the 18th of March.
Would you have time to meet that day or the next regarding the Old Farm building file?
Mornings work best for me. Please indicate where I should meet you.
