479- : H istory of Cranberry usles before 1900 The group of five islands lying off the southern shores of mount Desert and originally incorporated with that island in 1789were set apart march 16, 1830, and became a separate mun- icipality. The islands are Great Cranberry Little Cranberry (widesford), Sutton's Bear, and Baker's On all these islands grow quantities of the small ruly cranberies, known as "highland" or "upland" cranberries so the name of two of them has an obvious origin.
