1. In progress: "A Time for Bach: The Story of the Bach Aria Group (1946-1996)"
Sara Lambert Bloom is currently at work on a book: "A Time for Bach: The Story
of the Bach Aria Group (1946-1996)." It is a challenging story, with its intersection
of artistry, scholarship, humanity, personality, and vision, told much along the lines
of the new histories, e.g., Ross King's Brunelleschi's Dome, that combine social
context, personal biography, and technical information within the telling of the
story of a central accomplishment.
In response to previewing selected chapters, Benita Valente, Isaac Stern, Cori
Ellison, the dramaturg at City Center Opera, Donald Vroon, the editor of the
American Record Guide, which recently took over Musical America, and the
composers Libby Larsen and William Bolcolm, both of whom are known for their
cultural leadership essays and lectures, have agreed to serve as readers.
2. In progress: Oboe Primer dictated by Robert Bloom in the 1970s, with his complete
discography and selected articles and correspondence.
3. "Henry Meyer at 70: Profile of a Triumphant Survivor" Chamber Music (The Official
Publication of Chamber Music America) New York, Volume 10, No. 3, Fall 1993, pp
16-20, 59.
(Written when we were colleagues at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music on
the occasion of Henry's retirement. After surviving Auschwitz, Henry was invited to join
the LaSalle Quartet in 1945, the first quartet enrolled in the newly created post-
graduate chamber music program at Juilliard, and went on to an exemplary career,
performing and teaching worldwide.)
