Obituarie

As family members arrived home on
Islesford Tuesday morning, his
daughter Karen lowered the flag to
half-mast at the town dock It was an
appropriate tribute on Flag Day.
A graveside memorial service will
be held Monday, June 20 at 1:30 p.m.
at the Stanley Cemetery on Islesford
Donations in Mr. Fernald's memory
may be sent to the Islesford Volunteer
Fire Department to support the First
Responder program.

CRANBERRY ISLES - Warren
Everett Fernald, 77, died in the early
morning of June 14, 2005 at Mount
Desert Island Hospital after coura-
geous battle with cancer.
He was born July 17.1927 in Isles-
ford. Maine, the son of Malcolm Eu-
gene Fernald and Ella Frances Spurl
ing
He attended Coburn High School
and served in the U.S. Navy for five
years. He was on number of ships,
but his favorite was the USS Bronx.
Mr. Fernald married Anna Marie
Cameron of Bar Harbor, on New
Year's Eve in 1949, when he was
home on a 10-day leave. Five months
later they settled into their Islesford
home on Little Cranberry Island To-
gether they raised family of six chil-
dren and Mr. Fernald maintained a
successful career of lobster fishing,
Mr. Fernald was charter mem-
ber of the Maine Lobstermen's Asso-
ciation. He also held the position of
health officer for the Town of Cran-
berry Isles and had served on the
board of selectmen. He was proud to
claim 44 years of sobriety as one of
his accomplishments and be could
state, to the penny, the amount of
money be saved from not smoking
cigarettes for 14 years.
During the summer, when Mr.
Fernald was not out on his boat,
Mother Ann, he could often be found
repairing lobster traps in his "office"
on the restaurant dock. He took his
breaks in the pottery shop of his
good friend, Marian Baker. where a
chair had his name on it. and friends
stopped by to talk over cup of cof
fee.
He was an avid reader. often read-
ing three books at a time, and was a
Scrabble champion He kept in shape
in the winter by cutting, splitting and
stacking wood for the coming year
from fallen trees on the island He
loved his island home and he truly
enjoyed his work on the water. He
shared his gratitude and love of na-
ture easily with others Mr. Fernald
was a welcoming friend who opened
his home to many people.
He is survived by his wife Anna;
his children and their spouses, Bruce
and Barb Fernald of Islesford Mark
and Vicky Fernald of Bar Harbor and
Islesford. Dan and Katy Fernald of
Mount Desert and Islesford, Karen
and Hugh Smallwood of Baltimore
and Islesford Paul and Brenda Fer-
nald of Northeast Harbor and Isles
ford, and Kelly Fernald and Betsy
Dawkins of Cape Elizabeth: grand
children Erin and Aaron Gray;
grandchildren Fritz Robin, Malcolm,
Marcus, Christopher Camden, Cole-
man, and Emma Fernald: step-
grandchildren Annie and Chandler
Morse and Hugh Smallwood of Bal-
timore, Md.: half sister Barbara Davis
of Damariscotta: brother-in-law
Bruce and Nancy Cameron of Tren-
ton: brother-in-law Bob Clark of
Trenton: and several nieces and
nephews
Mr. Fernald is also survived by the
