Marjorie E. Phippen, (1904-2002)
Marjorie E. Phippen
Marjorie E. Phippen, of
Southwest Harbor, died at age 97
March 20, 2002, in Bar Harbor.
She was born July 15, 1904, on
Cranberry Island, the daughter of
Oscar and Millie (Harding)
Bulger.
-
She was married to Leslie
"Phip" Phippen for 65 years and
lived nearly all her long life on the
island. An accomplished wife and
mother, she also worked for sever-
al "summer families." She loved
playing her piano, and she and
"Phip" were "regulars" at the
island dances. She served as town
clerk and later became post-
mistress of Great Cranberry Isle.
She was a lifelong member of the
Ladies Aid, a group which faith-
fully supported Cranberry Island
Church. Mrs. Phippen was well
known for her beautiful, hand-
sewn quilts, as well as for the
most delicious pies and dough-
nuts. She served her community
and her family with unconditional
love. Since her husband died in
1986 she had been living in
Southwest Harbor, where she
truly enjoyed going to the Kozy
Kove Restaurant for lunches, usu-
ally with her daughter-in law,
Lucie, as a companion, but the
rest of the family often joined
them.
Mrs. Phippen loved meeting
people and always had a hug or a
kiss and a kind word for all she
met. When her declining health
forced her to remain at home, she
continued to be a courageous
example to her family. In her
more than 97 years of life, she
bore many hardships and experi-
enced many joys.
In addition to her husband she
was predeceased by her sister,
Hilda; her sons, Paul and Shirley;
daughters, Louise and Wenonah;
and grandchildren, Bobby and
Debbie. She endured the pain of
these losses, but never com-
plained, "Why Me?" She is sur-
vived by her son, Richard of Bass
Harbor; 12 grandchildren, 13
great-grandchildren, eight great-
great-grandchildren; special
friends Mary and Paul Kessler.
There will be a memorial ser-
vice this summer, and her ashes
will be buried at Harding Family
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her
family requests that donations in
her memory be made to the
Cranberry-Island Church, care of
Gaile Colby, treasurer, Cranberry
Isles 04625; or to the Maine
Seacoast Mission, 127 West St.,
Bar Harbor 04609.
