CRANBERRY ISLES - Hazel
E. Peterson, know as "Snooks" or
"Brookes," 85, died peacefully in
her sleep on Jan. 8, 2006 at a Bar
Harbor health care facility. She was
born June 23, 1920 on Great Cran-
berry Island, the daughter of
Enoch and Beatrice (Birlum) Stan-
ley.
During World War II, Hazel
served with distinction in the
Women's Army Corps in various
parts of the country and was hon-
orable discharged. She married
Paul Jackson, who was sent over-
seas and died in Europe. In 1948
Hazel married Fillmore Peterson.
Mr. Peterson adopted Hazel's son
from her former marriage, Paul
Jackson Jr., and they had a daugh-
ter, Catherine Peterson.
Mrs. Peterson attended high
school in New Mexico and went to
college at South University in Ba-
ton Rouge, La.
Hazel always cared for others,
among them, Margaret Millar
(mother of her friend). She had a
keen mind, a great sense of humor
and a very generous heart.
She is survived by her son, Paul
Peterson of Arkansas; her daugh-
ter, Catherine Nelson of Lovell;
two sisters, Nina Turner and Mae
Joyce, both of Southwest Harbor;
five grandchildren, Stacey, Eric,
Gretchen, Molly and Matthew; a
great grandson, Owen Philip; and
a special friend, Louise Millar of
Great Cranberry.
Services will be private. Friends
who wish may make gifts in Mrs.
Peterson's memory to the fund
that helps maintain the Stanley
Cemetery on Great Cranberry, c/o
the Northeast Harbor branch of
Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Co.
