Joan,
I manage the lighthouse database on the Lighthouse Digest/Depot website. John
Bunker was keeper at Baker Island Light, near Mount Desert Island, 1860-61.
Could this be your grandfather? Joseph Bunker (his father??) was keeper before
him, 1853-60. It has been written that Keeper Joseph Bunker was harassed by
the Gilley family, as William Gilley had been dismissed as keeper for political
reasons.
Baker Island is one of the Cranberry Islands. You might want to contact the Great
Cranberry Island Historical Society to see if they have any information on your
grandfather. Their website is http://gcihs.org/ and you can email the president,
Wini Smart, at wini@smart-studio.com
You can read more about Baker Island Light on my website at
http://lighthouse.cc/baker/
Our records of Maine lighthouse keepers are are substantial but not complete.
Much of the information for the 1840s to 1912 comes from microfilm at the National
Archives listing payroll records for keepers for each year. These records are
Printed for wini smart
