Loose papers and 3-ring binder. Genealogy.
Loose papers:
I. Letter from Ruth (R.S.H.?) to "Uncle Les" (LVS) in 1991 discussing an article by "Bud" Long that
was published in the Ellsworth American before it was published in the Maine Seine. Ruth says 'he
beat me to it.' And she notes that Bud Long regrets that he had not seen the 1931 History of Dresden
article before publishing his. The two articles were attached to the letter.
First article: "The Will of Samuel Hadlock of Mount Desert Island" by Ralph Hamilton Long, August
1990 M.G.S. (Maine Genealogical Society?) The Maine Seine, Vol. 12, No. 3.
Discusses highlights of the will of Samuel Hadlock of Mount Desert Island (Hancock County Probate,
1:3), the first will probated in Hancock County. Author Long comments on noteworthy details: I.e. the
original will is missing and with it information that might have been on the back of the will, for example
file number, testator, and place where will was written. He also notes that in the usual phrase 'life is
uncertain' uncertain is replaced with 'short'. He notes that the names of the three witnesses are not
familiar surnames of the MDI area; two were from Pownalborough. Author explains Samuel Hadlock
was in jail at the Pownalborough court house awaiting a death sentence. He was hanged on October
28, 1790, for the murder of Eliab Littlefield Gott, 11 days after the will was written.
Second article: pages 252 and 253 from History of Dresden by Charles Edwin Allen 1931, explaining
the trial and death by hanging of Samuel Hadlock. At the July term of 1790 at Pownalborough Samuel
Hadlock was convicted of the murder of Eliab Littlefield Gott and sentenced to be hanged. It sets for
the details of the crime committed October 26, 1789, including the wooden stake used, drunkeness,
and a fight. Hadlock pleaded not guilty. A letter dated July 31, 1790 and published in the Columbian
Centinel stated Hadlock broke jail and escaped for two years. Public sympathy was with him and
Sheriff Bridge did not want to hang him. No record of the execution exists but that is apparently not
unusual.
II. Letters from Ruth to Aunt Helen and Uncle Leslie from Moscow Maine, Feb. 17, 28, and March 23,
1983, following up on research she was undertaking at their request and catching up on family
matters including an auto accident
