Context/History
A group of undergraduate men from Harvard College formed the Champlain Society in the spring of 1880. They spent summers on Mount Desert Island, ME studying the natural history and science of the area: plants and animals, geology, meteorology, and hydrology. During the summers of 1880 and 1881, they established a camp in a field on Somes Sound called Camp Pemetic and forged a trail from the camp past Hadlock Brook and the Lower and Upper Hadlock ponds to the base of Sargent Mountain.
